Undergraduate Research Committee
October 17, 2000

The second meeting of the Fall Semester 2000 for the Undergraduate Research Committee began at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, October 17.

Present: Bonnie Bratina, Carl Foster, Anne Galbraith, Bill Gresens, Aaron Monte, Rick Rodrick, Chia-Chen Yu, and Colleen Miron.

Rick distributed a letter that he intends to send to faculty by e-mail discussing the commitment by the Deans and the UR Committee to sponsor the travel of students and faculty mentors to the NCUR meeting in Kentucky in March.

He also mentioned that a course in communication studies is offered in the spring during which students design and instigate public relations campaigns for various organizations. He will try to get the UR program on the list.

The committee then discussed the virtue of various other avenues for increasing awareness of the program and decided that the web page and brochure are do-able. Committee members should visit the UR web page (http://perth.uwlax.edu/urc), print it out, and begin generating ideas for the next meeting. We will have a couple of working meetings to improve the web site and then use that information to create a brochure advertising the program.

Bonnie suggested borrowing good research day posters from students in various disciplines and posting them in building lobbies in the fall alongside the fliers that advertise research and the opportunities for grant money.

Aaron indicated that the letter to faculty with all the deadlines and dates needs to go out soon. Also, an informational session for writing successful grants was set up for November 6 at 6pm somewhere in Cartwright (location TBA). A couple of committee members need to attend to answer student questions. Rick offered the services of students in another course in his department who may be able to design the fliers for this fall to advertise this informational session. If they can't, he will write something up himself.

Meeting ended at 5:05 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, at 4:15 p.m.
