The first meeting of the Fall Semester 2000 for the Undergraduate Research Committee began at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 3.
Present: Lloyd Bogart, Bonnie Bratina, Carl Foster, Anne Galbraith, Bill Gresens, Aaron Monte, Rick Rodrick, Chia-Chen Yu, and Colleen Miron.
The committee first unanimously chose Rick Rodrick as the chair and Anne Galbraith as secretary.
Aaron Monte then discussed the budget with the committee and described the duties of the committee this year, which includes getting the word out to students and faculty about undergraduate research in the fall, and reviewing grants and organizing the Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creativity in the spring.
A discussion then ensued about ways to "get the word out". Rick Rodrick described several ideas that he and Aaron had received at Faculty Research Day during the panel session on undergraduate research, such as making presentations at department meetings, providing course credit to students (although some departments already have this in place), develop student ambassadors to promote research to other students, provide a video and/or brochure to provide students during freshman orientation/campus closeup/convocation types of events, and having students meet with student governance to gain support. Aaron stated that he already working on this last item. Bonnie Bratina also suggested having information available (the brochure?) in the ADL and/or career services.
Future fall meetings were then planned for every other Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. this would include October 17, 31, November 14, 28. Please mark your calendars! Meeting will be held in 145 Main Hall unless informed otherwise.
Meeting ended at 5 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 17 at 4:15 p.m.
