2. GCC notebooks were distributed to all members. D. Schumacher discussed the content of the notebooks and noted the December 4, 2001 deadline to have proposals approved by GCC in order to guarantee inclusion in the catalog.

5. First Reading, Proposal #1, EFN 486/586 Multicultural Education,
course description, 1-3 credits, objectives and content outline, effective fall
“The course will examine multicultural education as a reform effort for pre K-12 schools and the rationale for advocating it. Alternative approaches for implementing multicultural education will be discussed with emphasis on curriculum. Classroom activities to assist students in understanding and appreciating human differences will be presented and evaluated. Prerequisite: EFN 205. Offered summer session.”
EFN 486/586 has been taught for a long time, but required updating to reflect what is actually being taught in the course. The course was submitted to GCC as a 1-3 credit course; the lecture portion is 2 credits, and the field trip is 1 credit. The committee questioned whether students could be disadvantaged by the course being variable 1-3 credit, but not repeatable. Koppelman agreed that the credit change might avoid potential problems and will review the possibility of changing it to 2-3 credits with the department. Prerequisite “EFN 205” was added to the LX.
EFN 765, Seminar in Intergroup Education, course description, objectives and
course content outline, 2-3 credits, effective fall 2001.
“The course will explore the influence of group membership on individual identity and behavior. Problems resulting from interactions between dominant and subordinate groups (based on such factors as race, gender, social class and sexual orientation) in the United States will be discussed. The impact of oppression on both dominant and subordinate group members will be examined as well as effective strategies to combat oppression in schools and in society. Prerequisite: EFN 705 recommended. Offered summer session.
EFN 765 is offered during the summer in Innsbruck, Austria, as part of the Summer Institute. GCC wanted to know the difference between a 2 credit and a 3 credit course. The contact hours are less for a 2-credit course, but the content is the same. It was suggested that a statement be added to the LX-139 indicating that 3 credits typically involves the same topics, but the content is more in depth and a more elaborate teaching project is required.
Kent Koppelman agreed to revise the LX 139’s for both 486/586 and 765 and will submit them to Diane Schumacher.
