Chair Emily Johnson called the meeting to order at 3:40.

Mary Leonard was assigned the task of taking minutes for this meeting.

The minutes of Nov. 5, 2001 were approved.

New student member Gretchen Reba was introduced.

Chair presented the committee’s homework assignment from the November 5 meeting:

1.      Problems with General Education
2.      How do we define an “Educated Person?”
3.      What qualities do we say we want to nurture in our students?

A discussion of the Gen Ed goals led to the basic question: What does it mean to be knowledgeable?  Foe example, why does a student have to take a math classes if they want to be an Art major?

Many of the problems with General Education requirements stem from the misunderstanding of the purpose and validity.  It was suggested that the University needs to work harder at helping students understand why they are taking courses.

The focus of the discussion was then changed to looking directly at UW-L goals as stated in Appendix A on page 2.  The committee agreed that the specific goals were fine but need to be more “user friendly.”  Examples of goals were reviewed from Portland State University, Washington University and Southeast Missouri Sate University.

Chair Emily Johnson will take the task of re- wording the UW-L goals so that they are clearer and more helpful to students and the general public.

Next aim or direction for the committee: Move toward making general education more important.

Assignment for next meeting:

1.      Review Theatre Arts proposal

2.      Check finals schedule for December 17 meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:25.

Respectfully submitted,
Mary Leonard
