Some of the groups concerns and
opinions are:
Concerns/Opinions
1. Length of time, the
opinion was once you have Graduate Faculty Membership, it should be in place the
length of time faculty is at UW-L.
2. Graduate
Faculty Membership should vanish.
3. Certain
areas (e.g. thesis, projects, research) need
Graduate Faculty Membership, however the teaching side should not be included.
4. Streamline
process with a checklist.
5. Connect
the review of Graduate Faculty Membership with other reviews.
6. The department is
qualified over the Graduate Council to decide who should receive Graduate
Faculty Membership.
7. Is there a need to
distinguish between having Graduate Faculty Membership and not having Graduate
Faculty Membership?
8. Should the criteria
be changed? The council cannot make changes without compelling information.
Because of the diversity
of opinion, the Graduate Council discussed ways in which they could educate the
various departments on why there is a need for Graduate Faculty Membership.
The conclusion the Graduate Council
agreed upon is:
1. To find out when the
various departments meet and get on their agenda.
2. Compose a script, so
all questions ask will be consistent and arrange for small group discussions in
each department.
Dan requested the
Graduate Council e-mail all suggestions for a script to
duquette.rode@uwlax.edu as
soon as possible. The Graduate
Council agreed to the need of education of faculty, in regards to Graduate
Faculty Membership.
Dan informed the
council he would be sending a letter to the Faculty Senate in reply to their
charge in April.
Dan has ask for
volunteers (2) to read the Graduate Student Research applications.
(The due date for the applications is February 25th)

regarding the due dates of Graduate Student Research Application.
It is the general opinion of the council the dates should be changed, so
more students would have the opportunity to apply.
This item will be discussed at a future meeting.
