GRADUATE COUNCIL MEETING
Minutes-Monday February 25, 2002-9:00 a.m.
325 Graff Main Hall

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Dan Duquette, Chair.

1.            Approval of the minutes of February 11, 2002.

M/S/P to approve the minutes of February 11, 2002.  (6 yes, 0 no)

2.            Review of Application for graduate admission.
The application was briefly discussed, and Dan ask all council
members to review the application, any additions/corrections they feel is needed, they should note on application and return to Dan.

3.            Graduate Faculty Membership.  Update was given on the number of renewals applying for Graduate
Faculty Membership.  (17)

4.         The reporting line for the Director of University Graduate Studies.  Dan passed a hand-out  he is working on in regards to expectations for the Director/Dean of Graduate Studies.  This was discussed by the council,  and agreed that Graduate Studies should have a seat at the academic table.  The discussion soon turned to “Who does the Director/Dean of Graduate Studies report too?”  all options were explored, a suggestion was made to vote on the Director/Dean of Graduate Studies reporting to the Provost.

M/S/P to approve the Director/Dean of University Graduate Studies report to the Provost.  (6 yes, 0 no)

Dan will present a report to the Faculty Senate next week on this situation.  He ask the council for further suggestions.

5.            Graduate Student Research Grant Applications.   Dan gave an update on the Graduate Student Research Applications.  Dan would like to modify the dates of the research applications, in order to better serve the students.  Dan would like to see more awareness of Graduate Student Research and more students submit applications.  The council discussed this item, and will offer suggestions at a future meeting.

6.            Graduate Student Organization.  Dan gave an update on the Graduate Student Organization, the number of applications we have received and the dollar amount spent since July 26, 2001. (28 applications received, 27 approved, 1 denied--$2,766.00 funded).  Dan reminded council members to encourage students to apply for Travel Funds and Graduate Research  Funds.

7.            Graduate Re-entries.  Diane Schumacher passed  hand-outs on the numbers of re-entries.  Diane informed the council the target is for 20 students and also informed the council students re-entry to graduate programs can be accomplished with a phone call to Records and Registration if the time of re-entry is 2 years or less, if more than 2 years the students must stop in the office and complete a one page form.  Limit on non-degree students is 3 credits.

Diane informed the council there is no communication between Records and Registration and Graduate Studies when a student re-enters a program.  She ask the question, “Should the directors of the graduate programs have in-put on the re-entry of students”?  The council discussed and agreed the directors of graduate programs should be informed and invited to attend the Graduate Council Meeting on March 11, 2002.  G. Gilmore suggested that a vote be taken.
