1.              M/S/P to approve minutes of February 12, 2002

 

2.         First Reading, Proposal #14, ERS253, Introduction to Wisconsin Indians, 3 credits, new

course effective Fall 2002

 

?n introductory examination of Wisconsin Indians with specific reference to the Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwa, Oneida, Potawatomi, and the Stockbridge-Munsee communities. An interdisciplinary approach will be used to explore topics including sovereignty, land use and environmental issues, education, economic development, social issues, and challenges, and tribal identity. The course will also explore each tribe? response to both state and federal governments.?/p>

 

 

ERS/SOC343, American Indian Contemporary Issues, 3 credits, new course effective Fall 2002

 

?his course is an interdisciplinary examination of American Indian contemporary experience in the United States. It will introduce students to some of the critical issues in American Indian studies by examining the place of American Indians within the American imagination, politics and society. The course concentrates on issues of tribal sovereignty, economics, social class and structure, and the difficulties of maintaining a tribal identity in the 21st century. Prerequisite: One of the following: ERS100, ERS253, SOC225, EFN205, HIS310, W-S230. (Cross-listed with SOC; may only earn credit in ERS or SOC.)?/p>

 

Both courses are designed as electives in the ERS minor. ERS/SOC343 will also serve as an elective in the SOC major and minor. M/S/P to waive the second reading and approve.

 

3.              First Reading, Proposal #15, Sociology Major, Add new course SOC416 to electives, effective retroactively to all catalogs.  Remove ?r any four 300 or 400 level sociology courses?after SOC302 effective Fall 2002.

 

?ociology Major (All Colleges, excluding Teacher Certification programs) ?36 credits including SOC200, 302, 350, 390 or 395, and any one of the following courses: SOC402, 405, 416, 480 or 499. The remaining 21 credits will consist of sociology electives to be selected in consultation with a faculty adviser in sociology. Up to six credits in anthropology may be included in the sociology major if taken at the 200-level or above. Anthropology credits applied to the sociology major cannot be applied to the anthropology minor or archaeological studies major. To declare a major in sociology, in the College of Liberal Studies, a student must have completed 15 credits and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.30.?/p>

 

 

 

SOC416, Qualitative Explorations, 3 credits, new course effective Fall 2002

 

?his course is designed to familiarize students with the major techniques of qualitative data collection and analysis used by sociologists and other social scientists. These include feminist methods, participant observation, in-depth interviewing, biographical methods, content analysis, archival research, and a variety of nonreactive techniques. This course will also address the links among theory, data and methods and provide an appreciation for the qualitative tradition in social sciences. Students will learn how to conduct field research. The course will follow a seminar format emphasizing reading, group discussion, in- and out-of-class exercises, oral presentations, original research and writing. Prerequisites: SOC350; SOC390 or 395.?/p>

 

Discussions included removal of sentence from major (or any four 300 or 400  level sociology courses.) Department Chair Bulk thought this was removed by prior UCC action. Further checking by Records and Registration found no action by UCC. The Department passed this change last May, but it was not brought before UCC. The department wishes it to be included in this proposal as discussed at the meeting and the Dean of the College is in favor of the change.  M/S/P to waive the second reading and approve.

 

4.              First Reading,  Proposal #16, FLG203, Spanish for United States Hispanics, 3 credits, course deletion.

 

MLG204, Heritage Language: Intermediate ___________, 4 credits, new course effective Fall 2002

 

?aught in the heritage language specified, this course provides opportunities for students to develop intermediate-level heritage language reading and writing skills. Students learn the heritage language writing system in order to read and write short texts. Additional emphasis is placed on geographical variation within the heritage language. Prerequisites: ENG110, native or near native speaking skills in the heritage language, consent of instructor.?/p>

 

 

            MLG304, Heritage Language: Advanced ___________, 4 credits, new course effective Fall 2002

 

            ?aught in the heritage language specified, this course provides opportunities for students to develop advanced-level heritage language reading and writing skills. Students read authentic heritage language manuscripts, practice heritage language narrative and expository writing, translate documents in their fields, and explore heritage language features related to social customs.?/p>

 

Discussions centered around two points:?consent of instructor?span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  prerequisite; offering  course for credit if it does not fit in any established major or minor program.  MLG Department chair and TSL director will be invited to next UCC meeting. Held over for 2nd reading.

 

5.              First reading, Proposal #17,  MIC440/540, Bioinformatics, 2 credits,  new course effective Fall 2002

 

?n bioinformatics students will use computers to study and compare the sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA, or the amino acids in proteins. Computers are also used to examine the three dimensional structure of proteins. Being able to manipulate and study this information is the basis for the current revolution in Biotechnology. Topics include evolution, taxonomy, genomics and understanding disease. This course provides students an opportunity to explore the relationships between biology, microbiology, chemistry and computer science. Prerequisites: BIO306 or MIC230 (BIO435 or MIC416 recommended)?/p>

 

This course will be an elective in the Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology majors. It will be brought to UCC as a ?onsent agenda item?span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  by the Biology department at a later date to cross-list the course with BIO. M/S/P to waive second reading and approve.

ART220, Introduction to Metalsmithing, Forging and Raising, 3 credits change in title and course description, effective Spring 2002

 

            ? studio course involving basic principles of metal forging and raising with emphasis on design. Basic metal forging techniques and metal raising techniques will be discussed. These techniques will be investigated to develop design in functional and non-functional form.?/p>

 

 

            ART320, Intermediate Metalsmithing, Forging and Raising, 3 credits, change in title, description and prerequisites, effective Spring 2002

 

            ? studio course involving intermediate principles of forging and raising. Functional and non-functional form will be investigated. Intermediate techniques will be discussed and implemented through design form.  Prerequisite: ART220.?/p>

 

           

            ART351, Origins of Art, 3 credits, change in course title, description and prerequisites, effective Fall 2002

 

            ? history of the visual arts from prehistoric times through the fall of the Roman Empire, 28,000 BCE to 450 CE. An exploration of the development of art and its relationship to politics and religion in some of the world? ancient civilizations, including Europe, Egypt, the Ancient Near East, and China.  Includes field trip to area museums.  Prerequisite: sophomore standing.?/p>

 

 

            ART353, Renaissance Art, 3 credits, change in course title, description, and prerequisites, effective Fall 2002

 

            ? study of the history and impact of the Italian Renaissance on the visual arts from 1300 to 1750, including the Baroque and Rococo styles. Comparisons with cultures beyond Europe will be included. Includes field trip to area museums.  Prerequisite: sophomore standing.?/p>

 

 

            ART354,  Modern/Postmodern Art, 3 credits, change in course title, description and prerequisites, effective Fall 2002

 

            ? history of the visual arts from 1750 to the present, focusing on developments in the 20th century. Includes field trip to area museums. Prerequisite: sophomore standing.?/p>

            APH242, Digital Imaging Techniques, 3 credits, new course effective Fall 2002

 

?he electronic extension of the traditional, darkroom based, Introduction to Photographic Principles. It involves a comparison of traditional and digital approaches to photographic imaging, digital image making, scanning of film and transparencies and a detailed study of electronic

imaging software for image preparation and manipulation. Prerequisites: APH202, 232.?/p>

 

 

 

 

APH302, Photojournalism, 3 credits, change in course description and prerequisites effective Fall 2002

 

? conceptual, historical, ethical and practical study of photo communication. Students will closely examine the work of prominent picture journalists, work for on-campus clients and produce a standardized digital portfolio.  Prerequisites: APH202, 242.?/p>

APH342, Color Photography, 3 credits, change course description effective Fall 2002

 

?echniques of color photography are explored including composition, aesthetics, negative/positive scanning, electronic imaging, and computer image design. Contemporary trends in color photography are examined as well as historical precedents. Prerequisite: APH202.?/p>

 

 

APH402, Documentary/Editorial Photography, 3 credits, change in course title effective Fall 2002

 

APH412, Expressive and Archival Imaging, 3 credits, change in course title and credits, effective fall 2002

 

APH492, Seminar in Photography, 1 credit,  change in course description effective Fall 2002

 

?iscussion of the professional, theoretical and aesthetic problems relating to the presentation and display of photography. Students will produce a portfolio or a gallery show of their work. This is the capstone course in the photography minor. Students will serve as mentors in the photography labs. Prerequisites: APH202, 232, 302, 312, 412 and electives.?/p>

 

 

APH499, Independent Study/Art Photo, 1-3 credits,  change in course title, description and prerequisites, effective Fall 2002

 

?irected individual study under an assigned faculty member. Student is responsible for submitting a written study proposal for approval before registration. Prerequisites: Eleven (11) hours of APH coursework, junior standing, consent of instructor. Repeatable for credit  ?maximum 6. Normally 1-2 credits; 3 credits maybe given in exceptional cases.
