MINUTES OF THE GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE

MEMBERS PRESENT: Emily Johnson (chair), Mike Winfrey, Sandra Grunwald, Justin Odulana, Jess Hollenback, Jean Hindson, Roger Reinsch, Mitchell Stone, Mary Leonard

CONSULTANTS AND GUESTS PRESENT:  Beth Hartung (NCATEcoordinator), Bruce May-CBA, Steve Simpson—Rec Management.

 

The chair called the meeting to order at 3:35.

 

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 7, 2002 MEETING:  It was M/S/P.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Welcome to new member Mitchell Stone.

 

CONSIDERATION OF THE ERS110, MYTH AND REALITY: AN INTRODUCTION TO ETHNIC AND RACIAL STEREOTYPING PROPOSAL: Mitchell Stone presented  the new course proposal. The course will  focus on the impact of image and place in society. It will be part of the “Self and Society” category of the Liberal Studies component in Gen . Ed.  MSP (One abstention), to approve ERS110 as a new course without second reading, with the following suggestion from the chair: To clarify the goal relative to category placement.

 

CONSIDERATION OF WRITING IN THE MAJOR PROPOSAL FOR  RECREATION MANAGEMENT:  MSP  to approve the proposal pending the missing paragraph on p.10 of the document: ability to reach intended audience.

 

CONSIDERATION OF THE THERAPEUTIC REC. WRITING IN THE MAJOR PROPOSAL : The committee agreed to accept the proposal on the November 4 meeting.

 

OLD BUSINESS: Discussion of the fund for “Innovation in General Education”.   Emily said that this will be on the agenda for November 18th.   Emily will check into the ramifications of not using the funds.   The committee reviewed the outcomes of a similar institution.  She also handed out the drafts of two of our proposed outcomes – Content and Integration of knowledge (combined) and Effective Citizenship.  It was decided to meet in sub-groups before the next meeting to discuss the following: Communication – Jean & Justin; Critical Thinking – Roger &  Sandy; Integration of Knowledge – Mike & Jess; Aesthetic Engagement – Mary & Emily; Global Perspectives – Mitch & Emily.  The chair is asking for outside names to help with these small groups.  Chair briefly discussed the AGLS  Conference.
