Thursday October 3, 2003-1:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by Dan Duquette, Chair.
- Welcome and introductions of members.
- Elections of chair and secretary:
M/S/P to elect Dan Duquette as Chair and Fran Temp as secretary to
the Graduate Council for the 2002-2003 academic year. (8 yes, 0 no)
- Dan passed hand-outs of important
dates for the fall semester. October 25, Graduate Faculty Membership
Applications are due. Please send or drop off to Fran in 142
Mitchell Hall. November 4th through 15th, the council can read
files in 142 Mitchell Hall. Fran is here from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
if you are unable to read during these times, call Fran at 785-8124 and she
will make arrangements to have the office open. November 21 and
December 5, 2002 Graduate Council will review files. Hand-outs of the
review teams were given to council members.
- Time Extensions: Student #1's request for a one and a half year extension
was heard and reviewed. M/S/P
to approve a one and a half year extension, end date of Spring 2004 for
Student #1. (8 yes, 0 no) Student #2
requested a second extension to allow him/her to take comprehensive exams in
October, 2002. M/S/P to approve a second time extension, end date of
May 2003. (8 yes, 0 no)
- Graduate Faculty Membership:
Dan gave an update and review of the changes in applying for Graduate
Faculty Membership. The Faculty Senate has approved the changes,
however requested that the following be included, "whenever a person
applies for Graduate Faculty Membership, a current c.v. must be
submitted". Dan passed hand-outs to the council regarding
Graduate Faculty Policy Summary of Modifications and Modification to
Procedures for Submission. Dan also gave a hand-out on the category
opportunities, timeframe and criteria.
- Student Suspension: A hand-out was given of a letter from Larry Ringgenberg
regarding the appeal of a student suspension.

Catalog change: The following statement will be deleted from the
Graduate Catalog: “A special
student who does not meet a minimum 2.50 grade point average admission
requirement will not be accepted in any graduate degree program and credits
earned as a special student will not apply toward a degree.
All graduate level work, including courses taken at other accredited
institutions, will be included in the computation of the grade point average
for admission determination”. (This
statement can be found on page 11 of the 2002-04 Graduate Catalog, Special
Non-degree Student).

Policy Statement: Handout given and reviewed.
The statement reads: “If
7 years have elapsed and a student has not been active (enrolled in
classes-does not include GRC 799) for 4 semesters and has not completed all
the course work for the degree, the student’s status should be changed to
non-degree at the time of reentry to the University”.
This item will be on the agenda of the Graduate Council Meeting on
October 17, 2002.
- Workload update: Dan informed the Graduate Council that a survey had been
sent to all graduate directors and chairs concerning the workload.
Dan will keep us informed on this survey.
- Strategic Plan: Dan ask all council members to read and review the
Strategic Plan (sent out last week) and comments should be brought to
council meetings. Comments will
be forwarded to the Strategic Plan Committee.
- Dan announced there will no longer be a
August graduation, due to low attendance.
The Graduate Student Achievement Awards and Outstanding Thesis Awards
will be given at the May graduation.
- M/S/P to adjourn the Graduate Council
Meeting. (6 yes, 0 no)
