BIO 490/590, Current Topics in Biology Education,
1-3 credits, description, effective Spring 2003.
Biological researchers produce new discoveries almost
daily. The purpose of this course is to train K-12 pre-service and in-service
teachers in the current technologies and theories used in biology and to
demonstrate the current approaches to teaching these materials. Repeatable for
credit under different topics. Not applicable to a major or minor in biology.
Departmental option for Pass/Fail grading.

Biochemistry Major new major, effective Fall 2002.
Biochemistry Major
(All colleges, excluding Teacher Certification
program) - 40 credits, including CHM 103, 104, 301, 303, 304, 305, 417, 418, and
407 or 309; BIO 435, 436 and five credits of electives from: CHM 310, 431, 441,
499; MIC 406, 420; BIO 312, 424, 443, BIO/MIC 440.
Only two credits from CHM 499 may count toward the major.
Students will have the necessary background in physics and math by taking
prerequisite courses for courses required in the major.
CHM 407,
Biophysical Chemistry, 2 credits, new course, effective Spring 2003.
A course designed to help students develop a
fundamental understanding of the physical principles that drive biochemical
processes. Topics covered include protein structure, molecular thermodynamics
(especially as applied to molecular potential functions and protein structure
calculations), basic statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics & spectroscopy
(especially as applied to the study of biomolecular structure), and the kinetics
of protein folding and protein motions. Prerequisites:
CHM 417 or CHM 325; MTH 207; MTH 250 or MTH 208 or concurrent enrollment; PHY
104 or PHY 204.
This
course will apply as an elective in the chemistry minor.

New Business
The deadline for submitting proposals was previously the Thursday prior to
the scheduled UCC meeting. The
committee was in favor of changing the deadline to noon on the Wednesday prior
to the scheduled UCC meeting.
No charge has been given to the committee at this time, but should be assigned
in the near future.
