Committee on Academic Policies and Standards (CAPS)

DRAFT:  Minutes for 4/23/04

Faculty Members Present: Jac Bulk, Mike Haupert, Mark Headington, Adrienne Loh, Marc Rott, Barry Schockmel, Rob Wolf (after 3:45)

Student Members Present: Larry Golba

Members Absent: Susan Crutchfield, Sharon Jessee (excused), Angie Murphy, Jason Savatski

Guests/Consultants: Amelia Dittman (CBA), Kathy Elgin (CLS), Diane Schumacher (Registrar), Dean Stroud (Provost’s Office)

1.       The meeting was called to order at 3:35 pm.

2.       Minutes from the 2/20/04 meeting were approved with editorial changes (7/0/0).

3.       General announcements:

• Excess credit policy and unofficial withdrawal policy recommendations from CAPS were approved by Faculty Senate.  Chair Rott thanked the committee for their work on these difficult issues.
• Excess credit policy requires the appointment of a CAPS member to the Excess Credit Policy Appeals committee.  Chair Rott agreed to attend the first informational meeting. The CAPS committee for 04-05 will appoint a member to serve on the appeals committee.
• Concern has been expressed about 4+4+4 summer schedule, especially in terms of the 1 week/credit policy.  The committee members agreed that the entire summer session policy was the subject of much discussion and debate, and that Faculty Senate approved the recommendation from CAPS.  Any complaints should go to the Provost’s Office or perhaps Faculty Senate, unless specific waivers are being requested of CAPS.

4.       Motion (Bulk):  Go into closed session to consider personal information of students (seconded by Headington).  A voice vote was taken.  Motion carries 8/0/0.

5.       The Committee heard an appeal for a waiver of completing the final 24 credits in residence from CBA:

6.       The Committee heard a appeals from CLS:

Student “B”       (repeat a course off-campus)                                Denied              1-6-1

Student “C”      (commencement honors credits in residence)          Denied              1-5-2

7.       The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 pm.
