1. Approval of the minutes from April 9, 2004 meeting. M/S/P to approve the minutes from April 9, 2004.
2. GRC 799: Graduate Research Continuation – Proposed Summer Requirement
At the Graduate Council meeting on April 9, Garth distributed information from various colleges and universities that described policies on continuous enrollment such as UW-L Graduate Research Continuation (GRC 799). Also included in the packet were policy review discussion points and possible options for revision of the current UW-L GRC policy. The Graduate Council was asked to review this information for discussion of the current UW-L GRC 799 policy at the April 23 meeting.
A discussion took place to review the current UW-L GRC policy. The UW-L policy charges $100/semester; Fall and Spring only-not summer. UW-L does not apply GRC to all students; only those enrolled in graduate programs with culminating project requirements such as theses, graduate projects, and seminar papers.
Some issues the Graduate Council discussed were the resources available to students during the summer; possible exceptions to a proposed new requirement for very extenuating circumstances during Summer session, and requiring approval of exceptions by the Director of University Graduate Studies. Suggestions from EESHR Department Chairs included: increasing the fee/semester; having a sliding scale each semester (i.e., $100 to $200 to $300, etc.), and allowing a “free” summer following the semester after completion of all other degree requirements.
M/S/P to require GRC 799 enrollment in Summer session beginning in summer 2005 (in addition to the current Fall and Spring semesters requirement). Motion passed (5 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention).
