Minutes for 2/11/05

1.  The meeting was called to order by chair Loh at 3:30 p.m.


2.  The minutes from the 1/19/05 meeting were unanimously approved.  The minutes from the 1/21/05 meeting were unanimously approved.


3.  Old Business:  Enrollment Targets

Teri Thill explained the enrollment data the Institutional Research Office could gather in order to analyze the success rates of transfer students and freshmen.  She can provide at least ten years’ transfer and new freshman data by college, and it should be ready for discussion at CAPS’ April 1 meeting.  Data will include the following:


* graduation rates

* ACT scores

* grades from the transfer college

* admission priority categories

* resident status

* first semester GPAs

* probationary status

* credits earned at UW-L

* transfer school name

* number of transfer credits upon admittance to UW-L

            * GPA from transfer school(s)

            * last term attended

            * whether graduated

            * how long the student was at UW-L


4.  New Business


     a.  Summer Session Start Date Policy Appeals


            i.  Business 230, Economics 110, and Economics 120

                        Mike Haupert presented the appeal. 

Motion:  Rott made a motion to approve the BUS 230 appeal for one year.  MacDonald seconded the motion.  The motion passed (7-0-0).


Motion:  Rott made a motion to approve the ECO 110/120 appeals for one year.  Headington seconded the motion. The motion passed (6-1-0).


ii.  A discussion of whether CAPS should study the effects of the Summer Start Date Policy on summer enrollments was deferred to another meeting.


            iii.  Archaeology 402

                        Jim Theler presented the appeal. 

Motion:  Headington made a motion to approve the ARC 402 appeal.  Bulk seconded the motion.  The motion passed (6-0-0, Haupert had been excused from the meeting).


            iv.  Health Professions Department Course Group

                        Peggy Denton presented the appeal, which included all Health

Professions summer courses. 

Motion:  Headington made a motion to approve the appeal for all Health Professions Department summer courses.  Bulk seconded the motion.  The motion passed (6-0-0).


v.  Loh explained that some courses needing Summer Start Date Policy waivers had not yet come forward with appeals.  There was some discussion of how to handle these courses.  To expedite such appeals, the committee agreed to have Schumacher list the as-yet unapproved courses as “pending approval” in the printed timetable, and CAPS will vote on the appeals by e-mail as they come in.


     b.  A Fixed CAPS Meeting Time

The committee discussed whether CAPS should establish a fixed meeting day and time in future years.  No action was taken.


5.  The meeting was adjourned at 5 p.m.
