DRAFT: Minutes for Meeting 4/1/05

Faculty Members Present:  Jac Bulk, Susan Crutchfield, Mike Haupert, Mark Headington, Adrienne Loh (Chair), Gary MacDonald, Marc Rott, Bill Wehrs

Members Excused:  Emily Kruger, Marcie Wycoff-Horn

Guests/Consultants Present:  Amelia Dittman (CBA), Bob Hoar (Enrollment Management Advisory Group), Kathy Kiefer (Admissions), Ken Maly (Environmental Studies), Diane Schumacher (Registrar)

1. The meeting was called to order by Chair Loh at 3:37 pm.

2. Minutes of 3/4/05 were approved as amended (6-0-0).

3. New Business:  Summer Session Start Date Appeal

Ken Maly presented the appeal for ENV 201.

Motion:  M/S/P Haupert moved to approve the appeal as a one year waiver. Headington seconded the motion.  The motion passed (7-0-0).

4. Old Business:  Fall 2004 Enrollments

Kiefer discussed the enrollment data and CAPS’ initial draft of its recommendations to Faculty Senate. The committee considered the enrollment data and Kiefer’s presentation.  There was some discussion of whether admissions standards should be altered, and whether the guidelines placing students into priority categories for admission should be altered.  It was agreed that raising admissions/priority category standards would be bad.  Kiefer needs to review Fall 2005’s applications before making any recommendation on lowering standards for any priority category, though probably priority 1 guidelines could beneficially be lowered slightly.

There was some discussion of what kinds of information regarding standards for priority categories are published on UW-L’s website and in its admissions brochures.

Before finalizing its recommendations, CAPS will review Terri Thill’s data on freshman and transfer success rates (at a future meeting).

5. The meeting adjourned at 5pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Crutchfield
