Guest:  Galadriel Chilton (Library)

Excused:  William Barillas (English), Darlene Lake (Modern Languages)

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. in Room 120, Murphy Library.

I.  Approval of Minutes.  Minutes of the September 29, 2004 meeting were moved and seconded for approval with correction to spelling of Karl Kattchee.  Motion passed.

II.  MetaLib.  The Committee moved to Room 121, Murphy Library to view a demonstration on MetaLib, a new federated search portal for Library databases, by Galadriel Chilton, Electronic Resources Librarian.  MetaLib, when implemented next year, will allow for “one-stop shopping” when interacting with the Library’s databases.

During the demonstration, attention was drawn to the Library’s subject arrangement of databases and committee members expressed interest in having their departments provide feedback to the Library on the databases listed in their disciplines.  It was suggested that John Jax, Collections Development Librarian, ask his Library liaisons to look at the subject resources listed in their disciplines and give him feedback.  John could relay that feedback to Galadriel who could add, delete, or otherwise modify databases listed under the subject resources.

Discussion of the new SFX search feature and the graphics of the GetText button revealed that committee members felt that students would not have much of a problem changing to a new graphic, such as “Find It,” if it were decreed as a UW Library System standard.

III.  Library Director’s Report.  A.  LibQual+.   The LibQual+ survey results are up on the Library’s home page.  These include an executive summary, results for Murphy Library, and results for the UW System.  Anita Evans distributed copies of the executive summary to the committee and asked members for suggestions on how to approach the large quantity of data incorporated in LibQual+.  Graduate students had the highest percentage of complaints so perhaps one approach would be to figure out what courses are available to educate graduate students on the library’s services and products.  Perhaps there could be a GenEd course for graduates, a one credit research methods course for incoming graduate students.  Denis Provencher will send out a reminder to committee members to look at the LibQual+ results and report back to him ideas for using the data.

            B.  Discussion on the Legislative DIN was deferred until next meeting.

IV.  Bylaw revisions.  Motion to change the wording at the end of the first sentence in the Committee’s bylaws that defines the membership of the committee by adding the phrase, “one of whom shall be a graduate student.”  M/S/P.   Denis Provencher will take this motion to Bruce Riley, Faculty Senate Chair, for approval.

Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 17, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 120.

Meeting adjourned, 10:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Paul Beck
