1. Meeting was called to order at 1:12 p.m. in Rm. 120, Murphy Library
2. Minutes. Minutes of the March 10, 2006 meeting were approved.
3. Response to John Jax’s Presentation at March 10 meeting.
Members of the committee expressed their responses to the John’s presentation. These included:
Karl Kattchee noted that we need to acknowledge the problem of limited funds and investigate ways to reduce our expenditures while responding to needs.
Paul Beck noted that we need to make faculty aware of the importance of attempting to retain rights to their scholarly publications.
William Barillas noted that the cost of electronic periodicals is growing exponentially and faculty need to be aware of this and of the consequences.
4. Memorandum to Faculty Senate re. Library Fee.
The memo to the Faculty Senate drafted by Karl Kattchee was edited by the committee, with William Barillas leading the way.
Student representatives noted that there may be some question regarding the feasibility of the library securing segregated fee funds from the Student Senate Apportionment Committee. The library may need to ask the committee for a new student fee. Karl and Anita commented that they had the impression from Ron Lostetter that adding anew differential tuition fee was unlikely to be approved. They will talk to Larry Ringgenberg in order to clarify this.
5. Director’s Report.
Anita Evans presented a floor plan of proposed reorganization of the first floor. The plan would move the bound periodicals to the ground floor, and open up the first floor to include group study areas with more printers and laptops. The modification will be funded by a Lab Mod grant of approximately $59,000 that the library received.
During the NCA accreditation review, an NCA representative will meet with Anita Evans and other members of the library on April 24 at 10:15 a.m. in room 121. Interested Library Committee Members may attend this meeting.
