1. Proposed changes in the Special Physical Education
Concentration were presented.
·
The title of the concentration will be changed from Special Physical
Education to Adapted
Physical
Education.
·
To be admitted to the concentration, students currently must have a
2.5/4.0 GPA, a grade
of C or above
in ESS 231, and they do not have to be admitted to PETE. With the
proposed changes in admission, students must have a 2.75 GPA, a grade of
BC or better, and admission to PETE in order to be admitted to the
concentration.
· ESS 435 (Sports for
Persons with Disabilities, 2 credits) will be dropped from the required
concentration coursework and ESS 437
(Teaching Models in Adapted Physical Education, 3 credits) will be
added. This curriculum change reflects the need for more
coursework and classroom experience to prepare well-qualified teacher
candidates in adapted physical education. ESS 435 will not be
removed from the UW-L catalog.
· The above will result
in a change in total credits required (from 14 to 15) to complete
the adapted physical education
concentration. |

Math Program Changes – Jennifer Kosiak:
- The Mathematics Department is proposing to change the
prerequisite for MTH 126, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II,
from “MTH 125” to “MTH 051 (or satisfactory mathematics placement
test score) and MTH 125.” The course MTH 125, Mathematics for
Elementary Teachers I, has the prerequisite “MTH 051 or satisfactory
placement test score.”
- This proposed change would help transfer students who may be
experiencing difficulty with MTH 125. Numbers directly affected are
thought to be about 1-2 transfer students per semester. This change
will provide more sustained support for these students.

Modern Languages Program Changes – Jean Hindson
- Spanish Civilization Course Selection
- This change requires all Spanish teacher certification
candidates to take both Spanish Civilization (SPA 320) and
Spanish American Civilization (SPA 321). The current
requirement is to take one of the two. This does not change
credits to minor or major. It only affects the relative number
of elective and required credits and which courses students take
in the elective credit category.
- This change will also help students better prepare for the
Praxis exam.

Modern Languages Program Changes – Jean Hindson
- German Studies
- Required credits will be reduced from 9 to 6 credits
outside the department. A new course in German literature in
translation has also been created. Several specific course
requirements (300 or 301, 313, 320, 330, 420) have also been
changed to general course requirements (one course in
literature, one in civilization, two in skills development).
The only exception is students wishing to teach German have to
take 330 because of the phonetics element.

DES Application Procedure Changes – Jon Davies:
- DES is proposing two changes to their application procedures,
including deleting a LX line about specific courses included and
removing the reflective piece from the education-related experiences
area.
- DES is trying to remove certain requirements that might be
considered barriers to wanting to become a teacher, or considering
becoming a teacher. The major rationale for the changes, in
general, is that the existing processes DES was using were not
defensible in terms of differentiating student applicants.
