Adapted PE Concentration to Minor proposal – Manny Felix

  • Manny Felix presented about a change from the APE Concentration to an APE minor. A handout was provided highlighting the original concentration and the proposed minor and additional 9 credits that would be added to accomplish this minor.  This minor will replace the APE Concentration.
  • Students currently in the concentration will have the option to complete the concentration or the minor. Courses are planned only on a one-year cycle, but DES plans to offer a course twice a year to assist students who would like to take the minor over the concentration.
  • This minor would be open only to PETE majors, but this doesn’t mean that students from different departments or programs in ESS couldn’t take some of the courses. They would only be able to complete the minor if they were a PETE major.
  • Another handout was provided with the Guidelines for New and Revised minors by the General Education Council. The proposed minor meets these guidelines.
  • The LX form for this proposed change from concentration to minor was also provided.

Endorsement passed unanimously.

School Psychology Proposal – Rob Dixon

  • Overview: School Psychology offers an EDS (Education Specialist) degree in a 66-credit graduate program.  With the addition of the EDS degree, a capstone course was required.  At UW-L, this was interpreted to mean a thesis requirement.
  • We’re proposing the replacement of our thesis class with PSY 720 to better prepare students in this area.  We’re proposing this course be taken concurrently with their internship.
  • The credit change on the SPY 800 course from 1-3 variable credits is to allow students to become fully part-time during their internship, as per student request.
  • An LX form with handouts was provided highlighting a variety of proposed changes to course requirements in the program.  The Specialist Thesis is also changing from 6 credits to 3, so it can be taken over the summer.

Special Education Program Changes – Carol Angell

  • Delete RDG 432 from the EC-MC major – this course has not been serving needs as well as it could.  Students would still take Children’s Literature, Elementary Reading Methods, and in the minor there is another course.  This change would take effect as soon as possible and would impact current students who would not need to take this course.

Endorsement passed unanimously.

SPE Minor – Carol Angell

  • Requiring SPE 446/546 & SPE 447/547 (methods courses) to be taken prior to SPE student teaching.
  • Changing SPE undergraduate student teaching to be in compliance with PI34 regulations (length & credits) – 18 week program instead of 14 weeks to better prepare students. This also impacts graduate students.

Endorsement passed unanimously.

SPE Graduate Program – Carol Angell

  • Changing SPE graduate student teaching to be in compliance with    PI-34 regulations (length & credits) - Initial certification students in the SPE graduate program need to have an 18 week student teaching semester to be in compliance with PI-34.
  • Changing SPE 783/784 from 3 credits to 5 credits - Would better reflect the work of these graduate students and be in line with other programs. Concerns were raised about the cost of these additional credits. Students often need to take an additional course to make these credits, so this increase could result in some students not taking that additional course.
  • Adding SPE 715 to certification requirements – Add on certification students need the knowledge posed by this course.
  • Adding passing PPST for initial certification prior to admission to SPE graduate program (added notation regarding PPST, Praxis test, & portfolio to graduate catalog) – Students are getting caught off-guard right now without these requirements clearly stated.  The 10% rule of passing PPST does apply to the graduate programs.
