Order of meeting established for convenience of guest William Colclough, acting Provost/Vice Chancellor, to discuss draft of proposal for assessment of General Education instructors
Topics/questions from committee members
- membership of assessment committee: who selects?
- need for continuity of committee, for people with experience interest and/or expertise in assessment
- desire for exclusive faculty membership of committee
Responses from Prof. Colclough:
- Provost's office is interested in pushing process forward and "not tied" to provost's appointing committee
- membership should be all faculty, provost office possibly being "clearing house" for selecting qualified faculty
- Provost wants "setting up a structure to improve instruction ... If it's an administrative task, we lose the philosophy of what this is all about. Faculty has more credibility than I do relative to assessment"
- there is "a sense of urgency" for setting up a structure
- Director of General Education & Co-ordinator of Assessment "don't fold together; co-ordinator should be another faculty with release time"
