Meeting called to order at 10:10 am by Bill Schwan.

a.      Motion (Donahue/Reineke) to approve the minutes of March 14, 2008. Motion passed 6-0-1.

a.      The graduate student Elizabeth Durand was given an award for …..

  1. Professional Travel grants

a.                           Motion (Donahue/Gilmore) to approve the professional travel grant applications as recommended by the advisory committee. Some of them are partially funded. Motion passed 7-0-0.

  1. Graduate Achievement award

a.      Only one submission received from SAH.

b.      Motion (Kuffel/Donahue) to approve the Graduate Achievement award to Janae Halm from Masters in Public Health. Motion passed 8-0-0.

  1. Graduate Thesis award

a. There were 5 nominations for Graduate Thesis awards (1 from Biology, 1 from Rec. Management and 3 from MPH). The thesis award committee consisting of David Reineke, Tom Kuffel and Todd Weaver unanimously recommended Mary Joe Michels from MPH for this award. David and Tom mentioned that all theses were well written. However, the recommended thesis stood out for the proposed award.

b. Motion (Donahue/Rajagopal) to accept the Thesis Achievement award to Mary Jo Michels from MPH. Motion passed 8-0-0.

  1. Faculty Senate Charge

Bill Schwan mentioned that he would present the resolution and grade change policies approved by Grad Council to Faculty Senate on April 17, 2008

  1. Rescinding a motion passed earlier

a.      Grad Council went into the closed session.

b.      Motion (Kuffel/Donahue) to rescind the motion passed by the Grad Council on February 29, 2008 with regard to the appeal of a student from MPH. Motion passed 4-0-1.

c.       There was a discussion on conflict of interest and UW legal issues. The case will be discussed in the Grad Council meeting in May 2008.

  1. Faculty Graduate Status Applications

a.      Grad Council considered applications while in the closed session.

b.      Motion (Kuffel/Donahue) to approve all faculty members in the CBA list for graduate faculty status as indicated in the list. Motion passed 7-0-0.

c.       Motion (Kuffel/Gilmore) to approve the first 11 faculty members in the SAH list for graduate faculty status as indicated in the list. Motion passed 7-0-0.

d.      Motion (Kuffel/Donahue) to approve faculty member #12 in SAH list for graduate faculty status as indicated in the list. Motion passed 7-0-0.

e.      Motion (Kuffel/Rajagopal) to approve faculty member #13 in SAH list for Associate status. Motion passed 7-0-0.

f.        Motion (Rajagopal/Gilmore) to approve faculty member #14 in SAH list for Affiliate status. Motion passed 7-0-0.

g.      Motion (Gilmore/Donahue) to approve faculty member #15 in SAH list for Associate status. Motion passed 7-0-0.

h.     Motion (Donahue/Kuffel) to approve faculty member #16 in SAH list for Associate status. Motion passed 7-0-0.

i.        Motion (Donahue/Kuffel) to approve faculty member #17 in SAH list for Full status. Motion passed 7-0-0.

j.        Motion (Kuffel/Rajagopal)  Not to consider any grad faculty applications submitted considerably later than after the deadline. Motion passed 7-0-0.
