General Education Committee
325 Main Hall
November 2, 2009
Meeting convened at 3:34pm, Galbraith presiding
Attending: Michael Current, Anne Galbraith (chair), Tom Gendreau,
Jean Hindson, Gerald Iguchi, James Pierce, Tom Pribek, Robert
Ragan, Don Sloan
Excused: Kara Zweig
Guests: Student "A", Amelia Dittman, Kathleen Enz Finken, Guy
Herling, Barbara Rusterholz, Tim Walls
Student "A", appealing denial of substitution for Foreign Language
requirement
- time (to graduate) & additional expense
- not actually eligible for SPA 102
Dept.: Mod. Lang. standard is SPA 102; 101 is intended "remedial"
(grade isn't relevant to dept. denying appeal)
M/S/P, not to approve; voice vote, unanimous
Noncompliance is now compliance; Music Dept. has submitted
materials for assessment
M/S/P, to approve revised SLOs, in 6-pt organization; voice vote,
unanimous; refer to FS & GEAC
Charge #2 from FS: tiering GE, to complete English, Math & Speech
within first 30 credits
- waiting can make completing "difficult" course harder;
rely on high school experience for preparation
- many advisors suggest against taking several difficult and/or
time-consuming courses simultaneously
- enough sections must be available during each year to
accommodate all freshmen
- many need remedial math; dept. has plenty of resources for
tutoring
- enforcement & consequences: will people be denied registration
for failing/avoiding a class? Technology, advising, appeal
complication?
- define "complete"
Continue discussion next meeting
Meeting adjourned at 5:01pm
