GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

Members Present: Rob Dixon, Kasi Periyasamy, Vijendra Agarwal, Glenn Wright, Michele Thorman, Abdulaziz Elfessi, Tom Krueger, Jim Finch, Carol Angell

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Rob Dixon.
1. Announcements
a. Rob Dixon assigned the following faculty to review graduate faculty applications
i. Dixon & Elfessi to CLS
ii. Thorman & Finch to SAH and SBA
b. VJ announced a request of $40,000 to the Academic Initiatives Allocation Committee
c. VJ reviewed graduate student RSEL numbers
2. Academic Appeal
a. Abdulaziz Elfessi (Motion) and Tom Krueger (Second) to move into close session under s. 19.85 (1), Stats., to consider an appeal
i. Role Call vote (8-0-0) to move to closed session
ii. M/S/P to approve completed 12 credits as a graduate special student (8-0-0)
iii. M/S/P to allow the student to complete the class that she is currently taking (3 cr) as a graduate special student (8-0-0)
3. Open Session
a. Glen Wright (Motion) and Tom Krueger (Second) to return to open session (8-0-0)
4. English Proficiency
a. ESL policy currently defined for the undergraduate level. Rob Dixon distributed proposed language for ESL Admission Policy and Probation & Retention Standards for a first reading.
b. Recommended clarification of “after nine credits” in the Probation & Retention Standards for points 2 & 3 to read “upon completion of nine credits”
c. Recommended in #4 of Probation & Retention Standards to change “after nine credits” to read “upon completion of nine credits.”
d. Need to add that an individual who graduates with a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. school can have the requirement waived.
