Midwest Compact
Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) helps improve access to education through the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP).
Although the MHEC is composed of eleven Midwestern states, the MSEP is a voluntary program and only seven of the eleven states participate. Over 125 colleges and universities in Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin have opened their doors to each others' citizens at more affordable rates.
Through the MSEP, public institutions agree to charge students no more than 150% of the in-state resident tuition rate for specific programs; private institutions offer a 10% reduction on their tuition rates. You must be enrolling as a non-resident student at a participating MSEP campus to receive the discount. UW-La Crosse is a participating MSEP campus.
The MSEP is not a scholarship but rather a means of tuition reduction. Actual savings through the program will vary from institution to institution depending upon the tuition rates.
Midwest Compact Overview
There are a number of conditions that must be met to
be eligible for the program at UW-La Crosse:
- If you are an undergraduate student, you must have a declared major. If you are a graduate student, you must be admitted to a graduate program of study.
- You must remain in “good standing” academically (please refer to page 41 of the undergraduate catalog or page 22 of the graduate catalog for specifics). If you fall below good standing, you will be required to pay full non-resident tuition.
- You must have full-time status (undergraduates = 12 credits or above; graduates = 9 credits or above) on the first day of the semester. If you drop to less than full-time status after the first day, you can stay in the program the remainder of the semester. However, you must enroll as a full-time student the following semester to be renewed. If you do not enroll full-time the following semester, you will be required to pay full non-resident tuition.
- You must maintain continuous fall and spring enrollment. If you stop out (do not enroll) for a fall or spring semester, you will be removed from the program and will be required to pay full non-resident tuition.
