College of Libeal Studies London Study Program
Spring 2012 Call for Proposals
Overview: Every year, the College of Liberal Studies sponsors a week-long study program in London over spring break. Faculty participants designate which of their spring courses students could enroll in and have the option of going on the London spring break trip. These students pay an additional course fee to cover the travel expenses for the program.
In London, students and faculty meet for seminar discussions and then engage with the city to apply/investigate course topics. In past, faculty and students have participated in activities such as day trips to Stonehenge, Bath and Salisbury, visited museums such as the British Museum and the National Gallery, and attended theatre productions as well as participating in other tours and city excursions. Faculty will work with the CLS Dean’s Office to determine activities appropriate for their class(es).
Funding: Basic faculty expenses are generally funded through student special course fees. The extent of funding for faculty travel depends upon the number of students enrolled in the program. Special requests (i.e. request for a single room) or guest travel expenses will be provided by the faculty.
Faculty Responsibilities: As a faculty-lead program, faculty are expected to travel with students to and from London and to participate in daily activities with students. While in London, faculty and students will be housed in a local hotel. Faculty will be paired with other faculty to share lodgings, but may request and pay the difference for a single room. Travel arrangements are coordinated by the CLS Dean’s Office.
All students and faculty members are expected to attend information and orientation meetings to assist in preparing students for the study abroad experience. An information meeting for prospective students will be scheduled for early October 2011. One orientation meeting will be scheduled toward the end of the fall semester and a second orientation meeting will take place prior to departure in spring 2012.
Proposals: If you are interested in teaching in the London Study Program, please submit a proposal for your participation that includes:
- The name(s) of courses to be linked with the program, brief course descriptions, and why the course would be enhanced through study abroad.
- How you plan to engage the city of London in the course. While specific details may change as planning evolves, please indicate the places and sites in the city (or surrounding areas) you anticipate visiting.
Proposals are due by 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011 and should be submitted to Julia Johnson via email: jjohnson2@uwlax.edu. If you have any questions about the program or submitting a proposal, please call Julia at 5-8113.
