Workshops

Archaeology in the Classroom

Have you always been interested in archaeology?  Would you like to introduce your students to the area’s first people?  Not sure how to get started?  This workshop will introduce you to the science of archaeology and what archaeologists’ have learned about the area’s earliest people.  Participate in hands-on activities applicable to the classroom, tour the archaeology lab, review classroom materials and learn about useful resources like student scholarships for summer programs and the matching funds program which can assist you in bringing MVAC staff and resources into your classroom. 

To sign up for the workshop visit http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/TeaWkshp.htm and complete the on-line form, then send your $25 check (made out to MVAC) to Bonnie Jancik, UW-L MVAC, 1725 State St., La Crosse, WI 54601.  For those wishing to receive 0.55 CEUs, the additional $15 fee will be collected at the workshop.  Registration closes on Friday, June 14 and is limited to 20 people.

Fee:  $25 (receive 0.55 CEUs for an additional $15)

Archaeology Field Experience (3 days)

This multi-day event includes both field and lab experiences and is a well rounded opportunity for those who want to learn about the process of archaeology. Explore what it is like to participate in an actual archaeological excavation by working alongside professional archaeologists in the field. Participate in small-scale excavations (test units) and survey work. Lab work may include washing ceramics, stone tools, and other remains, and sorting them into basic categories. An experimental archaeology component of the event may explore making stone tools and pottery. Optional lab hours and local field trips will be available after regular field school hours. No previous experience is necessary. 

This experience is open to high school students through adults.  Fee includes a one year MVAC membership.  Cancellation prior to June 7, 2013 will receive a full refund minus a $100 cancellation fee.  No refunds for cancellations after June 7, 2013. This event is funded in part by a grant from the La Crosse Community Foundation Richard W. Brown Family Fund.
