- COMAP-2009
Five teams of UW-L students competed in the COMAP (the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications) Mathematical Contest in Modeling in February 2009. The UW-L teams competed with over 2000 institutions from around the world to construct a solution to a challenging real-world problem, using mathematical modeling. Two of the five teams spent an intense four days working to construct a creative mathematical solution to a problem involving the design and control of traffic flow in traffic circles. The other three teams focused their efforts on modeling the energy use of a nation transitioning from landline phones to cell phones.

CURM Conference, Brigham Young
Raymond Leach and Trevor Oswald attended and presented their research results at the CURM (Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics) Conference at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT on March 20-21, 2009. Their research talk was titled: “Market Games and the Effects of Memory on an Economic Model.”
COMAP Modeling Competition October 25-26, 2008.
On October 25-26th four teams of UW-L students (a total of 11 students) traveled to the University of Iowa to compete in the first ever Midwest Mathematical Modeling Competition. The students worked for an intense 24 hours to solve a real-world question using math. The students had their choice of working on a problem related to stocking and maintaining a fish population in a Midwestern lake or a problem related to evaluating and planning the implementation of a hypothetical law requiring all gravel roads in Iowa to be paved. The competition ended with teams presenting their solutions to their peers. The presentations of two of the La Crosse teams were ranked among the top three presentations in the competition. Participating students were (left to right in picture) Yanan Chen, Noor-E Zannat, Hoang Vo, Raymond Leach, Valentine Sackman, Vince Zander, Matt Cocchiola, Joe Lanska, (not pictured) Chintan Modi, Kyle Bisek, and Pat Copp.
Math department faculty members Ted Wendt, James Peirce and Barb Bennie traveled with the students as faculty advisors.

COMAP Modeling Competition February 14-18, 2008.
The UW-L team competed with over 500 institutions from around the world to construct a solution to a challenging real-world problem using mathematical modeling.
This year's team members were
- Jarod Hart (math/economics double major)
- Gus Borstad (math/physics double major)
- Kirk Wienkes (math/computer science double major
The team spent over twenty hours in a single weekend working to construct an algorithm for creating Soduku puzzles of varying levels of difficulty. See COMAP for more information on problem description.
