     Summer Mentoring, Adventures and Reading Together (S.M.A.R.T)

     Recipient of the 2010 State Superintendent's

    "Standing up for Rural Communities, Libraries and Schools" Award

    Number of Spots: 20 (La Crosse and Holmen)

                                        20 (Norwalk/Ontario/Wilton)

    A program open to all students entering grades 1-8, this program meets for five weeks, two days a week in the afternoons. Students are provided transportation from their homes to the local library. 

    Participants will

    • Be assigned a mentor (college student) who help them with guided reading
    • Be exposed to a number of enrichment opportunities within the community
    • Learn more about public libraries and their services  

    To celebrate the completion of the program, the group will go on a special field trip. For more information, please view our S.M.A.R.T. brochure and S.M.A.R.T. flyer.

     

    Application Process: Please complete one of the following applications online: SMART Registration Form (English) or SMART Registration Form (Spanish). Paper format is also available: English and Spanish.

    NOTE: If you are applying for SMART and you are going to 6th grade in the fall or you are either in middle or high school, you also need to fill out the following for SMART: DPI form (English) or DPI form (Spanish). Deadline to apply for S.M.A.R.T. 2014 is Friday, May 9 by 5 PM

    Space is limited. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be considered. Applications received after deadline will be put on waiting list.

     


    Mississippi River Summer Adventure – Introductory

    Number of Spots: 40

    The Mississippi River Summer Adventure – introductory Camp is a residential, week long program for students entering grades 7 through 10. 

    Participants will

    • Learn elements of math and science 
    • Develop team building, outdoor adventures, collaborative thinking, and exploration skills

    Mississippi River Summer Adventure – Advanced

    Number of Spots: 35

    Program description: The Mississippi River Summer Adventure – Advanced Camp is a residential, week long program for students entering grades 9 through 11. 

    Participants will

    • Travel to northern Wisconsin to camp, hike and canoe
    • Explore nonviolent social change, conflict resolution strategies, leadership training and cultural sharing workshops 
    • Visit a college campus

     

    Application process (Introductory & Advanced): To apply, please complete the MRA registration form (English) or Formularios en espanol.

    NOTE: Please include a copy of the student’s grades for the 2013-2014 school year (1st & 2nd quarters, at minimum). Deadline to apply for MRA 2014 is Friday, May 9 by 5 PM

    Space is limited. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be considered. Applications received after deadline will be put on waiting list.
