Library Committee Meeting Minutes of January 27, 2003

Members Present: Gwen Achenreiner, Frank Barmore, Liz Cason, Susan Crutchfield, Tim Gerber, Elsie Patterson, Denis Provencher, Cris Prucha, Julie Yazici (Chair)

Consultant: Anita Evans

The meeting was called to order at 4:08 by Yazici.

· Minutes from 12/16/2002 meeting were approved.

· Meeting times for the Spring term:. It was decided to meeting at 4pm on the third Monday of each month, except for March (due to spring break) and May. Our spring schedule is: Feb. 18, March 24 (after spring break), April 21, and May 5

· UW-L Strategic Plan: There was lengthy discussion of how to incorporate library concerns into the UW-L Strategic Plan. Prucha and Evans have already sent a memo to Billy Clow with some suggestions. Gerber stressed that, aside from the university’s plan, each college’s individual strategic plan should mention Murphy Library specifically. Check your college’s plan and contact your dean to ensure the library’s inclusion. Barmore stressed that the library’s own plans for the future should be integrated clearly into the UW-L Strategic Plan. There was much frustration and confusion about the general purpose and oversight of the plan. Will our comments be heard and incorporated into the final plan? Will the final plan have clearer oversight for implementation?
Barmore felt there were difficulties in fitting the library into the Plan because the library is not only associated with academics. Gerber felt the library’s academic role should be stressed. Crutchfield had various suggestions on integrating library concerns across different categories in the Plan.
Committee members should gather ideas and e-mail them to Yazici by next Monday (02/03) for discussion at the next meeting. For that meeting, Evans will find out who will receive our comments and who will be in charge of accepting or rejecting their inclusion in the Plan.

· Information Literacy panel at UW-L’s Conference on Teaching and Learning: Prucha reported that the panel was well received. Ron Rada sent all panelists an e-mail of thanks. There was some discussion after the panel about links between proposed changes to Gen Ed and the InfoLit initiative. To that end, we reviewed the document titled “GE Program 2002-3 Work in Progress Tentative Outcome Areas.” The Library Committee agreed on the importance of integrating information literacy skills into the curriculum even beyond the lower/Gen Ed levels.

· Library space planning survey: Achenreiner discussed the current proposed draft of the survey. She recommended gathering information from focus groups rather than sending out a survey. Members of the Library Committee will supply students for the focus groups. Evans will relay these comments to Jen Holman.

· ILLIAD: Randy Hoelzen demonstrated the new Illiad system for interlibrary loan. The new system will save time and speed up requests. The Library Committee is encouraged to try out Illiad in the next few weeks. The language for screens is provided by the system as a default, and in some cases could be changed. Committee members suggested that the "Request a Photocopy" button should be labeled, "Request an Article." Hoelzen will check to see if we have the option to change that button. The Library Committee should report other suggestions or problems to Hoelzen.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Crutchfield
