English as a Second Language (ESL) Admission

In order to apply for undergraduate admission, please follow the instructions below.

The English as a Second Language Institute at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse offers courses at six levels of English proficiency from beginning to advanced level.  The ESL Institute provides instruction for those who wish to strengthen their English skills for personal or professional reasons or to meet the requirements for degree study at UW-L.

Important Information about studying at the ESL Institute:

  • TOEFL Scores are not required for admission
  • On-campus housing is available
  • Advanced ESL students may also enroll in university academic courses
  • Language partners and friendship family opportunities are available
  • Enrollment at the university and receipt of a university transcript showing your ESL courses and results

To apply for ESL admission, please follow the steps below:

  • Application: In order to be considered for admission, students must complete an application online for Special/Non-Degree study at https://apply.wisconsin.edu/.
  • Processing Fee: a Processing Fee ($50 USD).  The fee is required and is non-refundable.  It should be made payable in U.S. dollars to the “University of Wisconsin-La Crosse”.  Please send payment by money order, bank draft, or U.S. check.
  • Academic Records: Official or officially-certified copies of academic records in all previous secondary school and post-secondary education undertaken, whether or not the program was completed.  This includes all transcripts, mark sheets, and national examination results.  Academic records issued in languages other than English must be accompanied by official (school-issues or certified) literal English translations.  Photocopies, scanned or notarized copies are not accepted as official documents.
  • Complete a Financial Certification Form with supporting bank statement.  Students seeking an F-1 visa are required to provide proof of funding for at least one year of study.  If you are admitted, these documents will be required in order for us to issue an I-20.
