Goethe University
JOHANN WOLFGANG GOETHE UNIVERSITY
FRANKFURT AM MAIN
Frankfurt’s commercial tradition, its
cosmopolitanism, liberalism, pragmatism, tolerance, interest in science
and technology, and its commitment to social issues have influenced the
university since its beginnings. The basis for the later Goethe
University was laid in the early 20th century through the commitment of
wealthy Frankfurt citizens, many of them Jewish, to promoting education
and science. On the 100th anniversary of Goethe’s death in 1932
Frankfurt University took its present name. Goethe University has 35,000
students, which places it among the ten largest institutions of higher
education in Germany. Over 600 professors are engaged in teaching and
research in the university, and a total of 170 different degree programs
are offered by the 21 academic departments.
FRANKFURT AM MAIN
Frankfurt is not a average university
town – it’s a lot more. Frankfurt is not a huge city of millions – it’s
a city of 600,000 in small neighborhoods linked together. Frankfurt has
it’s skyline and office buildings that makes it a financial center of
the European Union but it also has parks throughout the city. There is
something for everyone in the cultural and artistic opportunities to
explore. A great advantage for students is the incomparable mass transit
system.
Frankfurt is a city of trade, a financial centre, a transportation hub,
a major European metropolis, but also a city of intellect, of apple
wine, of small-town friendliness, green spaces and 180 nationalities.

Intensive German Course for Exchange Students (DIA Kurs) in September
Every year in September an
all-day German course takes place which is especially designed for
visiting students. This Intensive German for Foreigners course ('DIA')
starts on the first weekday of September with a diagnostic test.
According to your previous German language skills participants are

can do so on the form ”Zulassungsantrag“. For participation in the ”DIA“
course, good basic German language skills are required.
German Course during the Academic Year
During the term several German courses are offered by the
Internationales Studienzentrum, to improve and enhance German language
skills. In these courses specific academic language skills are taught,
such as composition and writing of academic papers, discussion and
presentation of papers, pronunciation and intonation etc. You can
combine a variety of these courses in your schedule.
Courses in German and/or English are available on Goethe's website:
http://www.uni-frankfurt.de/english/international/students/applicants/courses.html.
COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The
course equivalencies
spreadsheets have been compiled from
past approved Academic Plan forms.
They show when the course was last approved and
how it transferred back to La Crosse. You may notice that
some classes satisfied several UWL options.
This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of meeting with your advisor for final approval! They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.
