The University of International Business & Economics (UIBE) is rated as one of the top universities in China according to the Ministry of Education; UIBE is an academic institution with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research in the fields of international trade, business and economics.

Founded in 1951 and formerly called Beijing Institute of Foreign Trade, previously as an only academic institute for training talents related to foreign trade, finance etc.  It was firstly designated as a key university by the Chinese government as early as 1960 for its outstanding academic programs, and then redesignated as a national key university in 1978.  In May 1997 UIBE was put on the list of “Project 211” universities of the first batch, a governmental program aimed at turning about 100 Chinese universities into exceptionally world renowned high-quality academic institutions in 21st century.  In the year of 2000, UIBE has become one of the state universities under the leadership of the Ministry of Education, and in June of the same year it merged with China Institute of Finance, from then on, it has become one of the leaders not only in the studies of economics and business management, but also in finance.  Since its establishment, UIBE was committed to make high emphasis on academic research and business practice，preparing students to work in the areas of business, economics, finance，foreign trade，foreign languages etc.

The UIBE is located in the lovely Chaoyang District, the most international area of Beijing, located in the Northeastern part of China's capital Beijing; a stone's throw to many of Beijing's most revered monuments, easily accessible to all points of the capital thanks to an ultra efficient and comfortable transportation subway network.

BEIJING, CHINA
 Beijing is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the People’s Republic of China.  Governed as a municipality under direct administration of the central government, Beijing borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

Beijing is China’s second largest city after Shanghai, with more than 17 million people in Beijing’s area of jurisdiction.  The city is divided into 16 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties.  The city’s urban area has about 13 million residents.  Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city.  It is also the destination of many international flights arriving in China.  Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People’s Republic of China, while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields.  The city hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.

Few cities in the world besides Beijing have served as the political and cultural centre of an area as immense as China for so long.  The Encyclopedia Britannic describes it as “one of the world’s great cities,” and declares that the city has been an integral part of China’s history for centuries; there is scarcely a major building of any age in Beijing that doesn’t have at least some national historical significance.  Beijing is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates.  Its art treasures and universities have long made the city a centre of culture and art in China.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
 This program is designed for international students who wish to experience China through Chinese business and economics studies, field trips and cultural activities.  Two separate sessions (two weeks each) will contain three areas of study: five lectures on Chinese business and economics studies, field trips, and cultural activities.  Students participating on this program will earn a total of four (4) U.S. credits.

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The course equivalencies spreadsheets have been compiled from past approved Academic Plan forms.  They show when the course was last approved and how it transferred back to La Crosse.  You may notice that some classes satisfied several UWL options.

This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of meeting with your advisor for final approval!  They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad. 

HOUSING AND MEALS
 Students will be housed in on-campus residence halls as part of the program fee.  Housing information may be found on UIBE's website.

PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad; you will need to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from) other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a visa may be required as well. Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State Department issues travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with international travel health issues, and health recommendations specific to your destination.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  • A GPA. of 2.5 or better.
  • The desire to experience the world and receive academic credit for doing it!

PROGRAM FEE
The program fee includes the following:

  • Tuition (15 credits) and Administrative Fees
  • Housing (excluding meals)
  • Cultural Activities and Excursions (as arranged per course)
  • Study Abroad Health Insurance (required by UW System)
  • Orientation to Study Abroad Class
  • International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
  • Study Abroad Graduation Sash

Airfare is not included.
The program fee does not include a meal plan or meal stipend of any kind.

Financial Aid is applicable to program fees.

All program fees subject to change. Valid for undergraduate Wisconsin residents only; out-of-state students pay Minnesota reciprocity or a non-resident surcharge.
