First and Second Week Activities Spring 2008

There are several events that you may find particularly useful as you begin the new semester. The first is the Chancellor's All-University Address and Luncheon. These events allow all of us a chance to reflect on our goals as a university, and to reconnect with colleagues and friends.

• NEW THIS YEAR! The 13th Annual Research Day will be held on Friday, January 25 (as opposed to the “traditional” Tuesday). To register to attend, send an email to Jan Olson (olson.jani@uwlax.edu) including your name and department.

Provost’s Office Updates
Starting June 1, 2008 Bob Hoar (Mathematics) will replace Betsy Morgan (Psychology) as the faculty intern to the provost. During the spring semester of 2008, Betsy will continue as intern and Bob will have a 25% position in the office learning the ropes as the intern in order to create a smoother transition for the office in June. The faculty intern to the provost is a 75% annual position.

Grant Updates

• Faculty Research Grants: This year the Faculty Research Grants committee reviewed their highest number of proposals (40) ever received requesting over $400,000. The committee funded 25 proposals (13 SAH, 10 CLS, 1 CBA, and a joint proposal between CBA and CLS) for a total of more than $175,000. Bart Van Voorhis (Psychology) chaired the committee.
• Online Teaching Grants: The committee chaired by Brian Udermann (Exercise and Sports Science) received 15 proposals. Eight will be funded through the Provost's Office and an additional three will be funded through Continuing Education and Extension.
• Faculty Development Grants: The Faculty Development Committee chaired by Rebecca Battista (Exercise and Sports Science) recieved eight proposals and funded five. Application and guidelines for spring of 2008 are available at http://www.uwlax.edu/provost/grants/pages/sources/FDG.htm.
• Undergraduate Research Grants: The Undergraduate Research Committee chaired by Ashley Burrowes (Accountancy) funded 36 out of 41 proposals, totaling nearly $38,000 of which over $12,000 funded eight international projects. Grants ranged in size from $350 to $2,000.

Website - Current Catalog Available in Interactive Format
As mentioned in the Campus Connection, the web development team has completed an interactive version of the current catalog. This version of the catalog allows users to easily navigate or hyperlink to specific components of the catalog: http://www.uwlax.edu/records/ugcatalog/index.htm.
