Literacy Instruction
Library Instruction, Embedded Librarian, 100 participants,
Library. (Fall Semester 2009).
Library Instruction, Individual Research Consultations, 46
participants, Library. (September 2005 - Present).
Library Instruction, Murphy Library Reference Desk, 2,223
participants through September 20, 2009, Library. (January 2004 - Present).
Library Instruction, Library Tour for Faculty Candidate, 1
participant, Library. (March 10, 2009).
Library Instruction, Information Literacy Instruction
Sessions, Library. (October 2003 - Present).
Library instruction sessions are designed to orient students to the library's
physical space and resources and to teach students how to locate and use
information effectively. The number of participants in an instruction session
varies by class, and I have taught instruction sessions with 6 to 45
undergraduate or graduate students since Fall 2003. The duration of my library
instruction sessions has been from 30 minutes to 3.5 hours, with an average
duration of 1 hour and 50 minutes. While much of my information literacy
pedagogy has been designed for freshmen and sophomores in ENG110 and CST 110, I
have also taught instruction sessions for a variety of disciplines:
2007/2008
Fall 2007
- CST110 (14 sessions taught – four classes twice plus six classes; 237
individual students; embedded librarian for four sections of CST110)
- ENG110 (1 session taught; 23 students)
Spring 2008
- CST 110 (15 sessions taught– 3 classes 3 times, 2 classes twice; 170
individual students; embedded librarian for three sections of CST110)
- ENG110 (2 sessions taught; 22 students)
2006/2007
CST110 - 8 classes
ENG110 - 2 classes
RTH461 - 1 class
GEO460 - 1 class
HE469/569 - 1 class
MGT484 - 1 class
2005/2006
CST110 - 6 classes
ENG110 - 2 classes
RTH462 - 2 classes
French Film - 1 class
Information Literacy Instruction:
Timeline of Curriculum/Instruction Development
Fall 2009: Continued
development/refinement of embedded librarianship work with CST110 instructors
Susan Schuyler, Joseph Van Oss, and librarian Jenifer Holman.
Fall 2007 –
Spring 2008: Initiated embedded librarianship pilot program with CST110
instructors Susan Schuyler and Joseph Van Oss.
Fall 2006: Taught the
new CST110 lesson, and worked on revisions to further refine the lesson
depending on the professor and other factors. Prepared instruction sessions for
three new classes: RTH252, GEO460, and MGT484. While MGT484 was a short 30
minute overview, RTH252 was an in-depth 3.5 hour session.
Spring 2006:
Continued work with CST110 Lesson Study group including observation of the new
lesson, analyzing the video to glean insight on student learning, and lesson
revisions.
Fall 2005: Continued
refining CST110 instruction with the Lesson Study group, and developed a
looping video as a trivia-based virtual library tour. Began teaching a section
of the educational media course, Technology for Teaching & Learning.
Spring 2004:
Developed worksheet, began work with Lesson Study group.
Fall 2004: Started
presenting at least two goals to classes at the beginning of the instruction
session to help facilitate successful learning. Additionally, began using
visual images of flea markets and specialty stores as analogies to describe the
Web compared to library resources respectively.
Spring 2004: Began
implementing group learning activities in CST 110 library instruction sessions,
and created a visual aid to represent branches of information on the tree of
knowledge.
Fall 2003:
Collaborated with Cristine Prucha in developing a flow chart depicting the
means of locating articles at Murphy Library, and creating Murphy Library
Jeopardy: Know the Question, Libraries Have Answers an active learning game for
students in CST 110.
