Significant Student Involvement: Rachelle volunteered in several biology research labs Summer 2009. In my lab she did field work with us, and sorted microsnails out of leaf litter for a survey of Door County. She also trained some with the more experienced students in molecular lab work. Rachelle returned in Spring/Summer 2010 to work on the Land snails of the Driftless area research project. This work continues in Fall 2010.

Role: I am training and mentoring this student.

Germane Honors: Levi won several honors including best student presentation awards at Viterbo's Seven Rivers Symposium and UWL's Research and Creativity day.

Significant Student Involvement: Levi started Fall 2009 training on the molecular lab work. Spring 2010 semester he learned more molecular lab work. Running gels, working on the collections database, and observing the more experienced students. In the Summer 2010 Levi began work on Bithynia phylogeograph. He has continued this work Fall 2010 and has gathered a great deal of data and is currently training another student in molecular lab techniques.

During Summer 2009 Josh received a Dean's fellowship to pursue his research. He continued successful research through the fall and spring. During this time he also trained 3 other undergraduate students in molecular research techniques. Josh's work contributed to an article published in October 2010.

I scouted out a field site and led a 20 person field trip to Oakfield Ledge State Natural Area. The purpose of the trip was to introduce members of the general public to the rare plants and snails of this important Wisconsin habitat. This also linked up with the Year of the Escarpment activities.

Member of advisory board for development of plans for a new NSF-sponsored Chihuahuan Desert Field Station. Visited field site, suggested modifications to field plans, submitted written commentary to MSU.

 

Professional, Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, Identified land snails for workers at Arkansas Game & Fish, approximately 5 hours spent for the year, Yes, appointed, Pro Bono, Regional. (January 2009 - June 20, 2009).

As one of a few taxonomists with knowledge of land and freshwater snails I was asked to provide identifications for several samples from their collections. This is a common service provided by taxonomists to the broader public and museum community. In this case, Arkansas Game &Fish had found snails causing crop damage in the Southeastern US and needed to identify the snail for quarantine and containment purposes. I provided an identification.

Small redesign of earlier workshop. Invited new speakers, revised the laboratory-hands on component of the workshop. Gave two presentations and ran the laboratory session. Jointly organized with Kristen Jenkins (Nescent), Bryan Falk (AMNH).

Decided the content we were going to include, invited speakers to address content, designed a laboratory-hands on component of the workshop and wrote a lab assignment. Made a podcast of the instructional material. Made handout of instructional alignment with state and national science education standards. Designed a CD of instructional material that was produced by the American Museum of Natural HIstory (AMNH). Gave two presentations and ran the laboratory session. Jointly organized with Kristen Jenkins (Nescent), Joel Cracraft and Frank Fontanella (AMNH).
