Wisconsin Improving Teacher Quality Initiative by UW System. Advance the successful implementation and evaluation of quality teacher preparation, involve faculty from both education and subject-matter disciplines, and engage partners from PK-12. Funding will support campus activities related to initial preparation and/or on-going professional development of teachers, including mentoring and new teacher induction. Anticipated deadline: 2/09. Average award: $60,000/yr over 3 yrs.
Math and Science Partnership (MSP) by NSF. Supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. MSP projects are expected to raise the achievement levels of all students and significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations. Deadline: 2/17/09. Average award: $300,000 over 2 years for “start partnership” grants.

Teaching American History by Dept. of Ed. Raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge and understanding of and appreciation for traditional U.S. history by developing, documenting, evaluating, and disseminating innovative and cohesive models of professional development. Deadline: 3/9/09. Award: $500,000 over 3 years for districts with less than 20,000 students (52-65 awards given).

Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program by NSF. The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The program provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and programs for students who commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school districts. Anticipated deadline: letter of intent (LOI) due Feb. 09; proposal due April 09. Average award: $750,000 spread over 5 yrs.

Math and Science Partnership (MSP) by DPI. Increase the academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. Anticipated deadline: May 15, 2009. Average award: $400,000/yr over three yrs.
September 2009
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) by NSF. Increase the number of students obtaining STEM degrees. Projects may focus on the retention and/or recruitment of undergraduate students into STEM fields. Letter of intent (optional): 8/18/09. Proposal: 9/29/09. Average award: $1m spread over 5 yrs.
