Administrative Staff Updates

Ray Abhold has accepted the position of associate dean in the College of Science and Health. He received his Ph.D. in zoology. For the past 18 years Dr. Abhold has been a faculty member at CSU-Fresno. He is a professor of biology currently serving as an assistant to the provost and vice president for academic affairs as well as an assistant to the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. His research in neurochemistry has included undergraduate and graduate student participation. He has over 30 refereed articles and has received substantive funding from a variety of programs, including several awards from the National Institute of Health. Dr. Abhold has over 10 years of administrative experience that includes serving as director of academic resources, chair of the University Budget Committee and graduate coordinator for the Department of Biology. He is expected to start in early July.

William T. (Billy) Clow has accepted the two-year position of interim associate dean in the College of Liberal Studies and Director of the School of Arts and Communication. Clow began at UW-L 11 years ago on a one-year academic staff contract. For the past eight years he has served as chair of the Department of Theatre Arts overseeing a threefold growth in majors and a resurgence of UW-L theatre within the community and a concentrated effort in fundraising for the arts.  He has designed scenery and lights for over 100 productions in the past 11 years and serves as a founding member of Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre in Nashville. Billy has served the university in a number of capacities including Faculty Senate, UW-L Foundation Board of Directors, Strategic Planning Committee, chairing Joint Planning & Budget for five years and the chancellor’s search and screen committee. Billy begins his appointment July 1.

Dr. Bill Colclough has assumed the position of interim provost.

General Education Director Resigns

Emily Johnson will step down as the director of General Education at the end of this summer. The General Education Committee recommended a directorship several years ago and Emily Johnson was the first person to serve in this role. She has been director since the spring of 2001.

 

Emily has played an important role in increasing the awareness and importance of general education on our campus.  She also was instrumental in guiding the campus to examine the goals of general education and adopt a set of student learning outcomes. The Provost’s Office appreciates Emily’s dedication to student learning and her efforts to strengthen the program.

Online Teaching Director Announces Consulting

Brian Udermann has officially started his role as the director of online education at UW-L.  If you are interested in developing an online course or have any questions regarding your current course or online education more generally, please feel free to contact him (785-8181, udermann.bria@uwlax.edu, 149 Mitchell Hall).

Accountability Report

Every year each campus in the UW System completes an accountability report that focuses on four system-wide goals:

1. Provide access to higher education for the citizens of Wisconsin.

2. Provide academic support services that facilitate academic success.

3. Provide a campus environment that fosters learning and personal growth.

4. Utilize resources in an efficient and effective manner.

Violence Prevention Specialist

UW-L has a violence prevention specialist on campus through a grant that affects each of the three La Crosse college campuses. Ingrid Peterson is now serving as an advocate for UW-L students who need help with situations involving interpersonal violence. She is also available to provide education and training to any interested individuals or groups on campus.  Ingrid can be reached weekdays from 9:00-4:00 (785-5126, peterson.ingr@uwlax.edu, 306 Wimberly Hall).
