  • Admission requirements

    It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Physical Therapy Program that all students who desire admission to the program must meet the requirements and complete the admission process by the posted deadlines.  All applications will be carefully reviewed, adhering to the procedure detailed below.  All applicants, regardless of professional or academic background, must meet the following requirements for admission:

    • PTCAS Application:
      The program participates in the Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS).  The PTCAS application must be completed by August 15 for early consideration and by November 1 for general consideration.  To learn more about PTCAS please visit -PTCAS
    • Supplemental Application:
      The program does not require a supplemental application, however, applicants are required to submit a $15 application fee to the program.  Please include a completed copy of the following form with payment - Program Fee Form
    • Degree:
      All students must earn a Bachelor's degree prior to entering the PT Program.  Students may complete their BA or BS while applying, but they must complete their degree before matriculating in the program.  Accepted students completing a Bachelor's degree will need to submit a final transcript demonstrating the issuance of their degree.  The program does not require the Bachelor's degree be completed in any particular major or discipline, nor does the program have any bias toward a particular major or discipline.  Students enrolled in either of UW-L's Dual Degree Programs are exempt from this requirement.
    • Prerequisite Coursework:
      All prerequisite courses must be completed prior to beginning the program.  Students may apply with outstanding courses so long as they demonstrate a plan to complete those courses before matriculating in the program.  For further information on prerequisite course requirements please visit - Prerequisite Coursework
    • Grade Point Average (GPA):
      A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, calculated on a 4-point scale by PTCAS, is required of all applicants.  A minimum GPA of 3.00 is also required in the program's ten prereq courses.  Applicants not meeting the stated 3.00 GPA requirement will be ineligible for admission and removed from consideration.  For further information regarding the GPA requirement please visit - Grade Point Average (GPA)
    • Graduate Review Exam (GRE):
      Submission of Graduate Review Exam (GRE) scores directly from ETS is required of all applicants.  For further information regarding the GRE requirement please visit - Graduate Review Exam (GRE)
    • PT Clinical Observation Hours:
      Forty (40) hours of either paid or volunteer patient care experience in two (2) distinctly different physical therapy patient care settings (e.g., Inpatient Rehabilitation, Acute Care, Subacute Care, Outpatient Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Skilled Nursing Facility, Schools, Home Health) under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist are required for admission.  For further information regarding the observation requirement please visit - PT Clinical Observation Hours
    • References:
      Submission of at least two references.  For further information please visit - References
    • Narratives:
      All required narratives are directly included in the PTCAS application.  In addition to the mandatory narrative required of all PTCAS applicants, the UW-L PT Program has included several other narratives.  To learn more about narratives please visit - Narratives
    • Transcripts:
      All transcripts are to be directed to PTCAS.  Transcripts sent to the UW-L PT Program or the UW-L Office of Admissions will not be applied towards the applicant's application.
    • Technical Standards:

      A candidate for the PT profession and this program must have abilities and skills of five varieties including observation, communication, motor, conceptual, integrative and quantitative, and behavioral and social.  For further information please visit - Technical Standards

    July 1 - PTCAS Opens

    Candidates may begin the online application process via PTCAS.

    July 31 - GRE Deadline for Early Decision

    PTCAS requires Early Decision candidates take the GRE® and request scores no later than this date.  If the applicant's results arrive after the early decision deadline, PTCAS will automatically change the file from early decision to regular status.  PTCAS Early Decision

    August 15 - Early Decision Deadline

    PTCAS defines the Early Decision process at the following - PTCAS Early Decision  The Early Decision is a binding option for applicants who have decided that the UW-L PT program is their first choice and that they will enroll if accepted.  Early Decision applicants can apply to only one PTCAS program until a decision on their application has been made by the UW-L PT program.

    In addition to completing the PTCAS application, the applicant must arrange for PTCAS to receive all official U.S. transcripts and fee by this date.  Early Decision candidates must take the GRE® and request scores no later than July 31.  If the applicant's application, transcripts, or fee arrive after the early decision deadline, PTCAS will automatically change the file from early decision to regular status.

    The Early Decision applicant may be offered early admission, denied admission, or deferred to regular applicant status.  If offered admission as an Early Decision applicant, the applicant is obligated to accept the offer and will not be permitted to apply to additional PTCAS programs.  If denied admission as an Early Decision applicant, the applicant may apply to other PTCAS institutions for an additional fee.

    The Early Decision applicant is also responsible for completing and submitting the program's supplemental application and program fee by this date.

    Late September - Early Applicants Notified

    The program will begin making admission decisions on Early Decision applicants by the week of September 22.

    October 1 - Recommended GRE Deadline for Final/Firm Application Deadline

    Candidates are encouraged to take the GRE® and request scores no later than this date.  If the applicant's results arrive after the final application deadline, PTCAS will automatically consider the application incomplete.

    November 1 - Final/Firm Application Deadline

    In addition to completing the PTCAS application, the applicant must arrange for PTCAS to receive all official U.S. transcripts and fee by this date.  Candidates should take the GRE® and request scores no later than October 15.  If the applicant's application, transcripts, or fee arrive after the early decision deadline, PTCAS will automatically consider the application incomplete.

    The applicant is also responsible for completing and submitting the program's supplemental application and program fee by this date.

    Mid-December - Applicants Notified

    The program will notify applicants of their final admission status before winter break.

    It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin Physical Therapy Consortium that all students who desire admission to the program must meet the requirements and complete the admission process by the posted deadlines.  Applicants should be aware that admission to the professional program is competitive (45 selected for admission) and not all that apply can be accommodated.

    The admission selection process includes the following:

    • Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
    • Prerequisite GPA
    • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores
    • Review of the PTCAS application as a whole, including the following:
      • Responses to narratives
      • Past life experiences (ex:  employment, research, study abroad, etc.)
      • Feedback from clinical observation/shadow experiences
      • Feedback from letters of reference

    Transfer Credits:

    Transfer credits from other PT programs are not accepted.  Due to the tight sequencing and integration of the curriculum we do not accept didactic or clinical credits from other institutions.  All students, regardless of their prior background and education, must complete the entire PT curriculum at UW-L.

    Advanced Placement:

    The program does not grant advanced placement to any student.  If accepted, these students are required to complete the entire curriculum, regardless of background, education and experience.

    For International Applicants, complete applications are due in the Office of International Education by: 

    • July 15 for early admission
    • October 1 for general admission  

    In addition to the Physical Therapy program application and the university application the following items are required:

    International Applicants must use the university application materials issued by the UW-L Office of International Education. The physical therapy application materials, the university application materials, and the items listed above should be submitted to:
