Political Science and Public Administration Internships

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and the Department of Political Science/Public Administration have a very strong internship program.  Internships are a requirement for the Public Administration major and highly recommended for all Political Science major or minors.  A student may earn as many as 12 credits for a semester of internship.  Internships can be part time or full time, paid, or unpaid.

How Do I Get an Internship?

bullet

Go to the Career Services Office in Wilder Hall.

The Career Services office is on the second floor in Wilder.  The person to see is Maureen Wilson.  You will need to establish a disk resume ($20 cost) and open an internship file.  Career Services holds information sessions on internships every semester.  All students are encouraged to attend one of their information sessions.  Call career services for times and dates.  It is also very important to know that all registration for internship credit is done through Career Services.

bullet

Talk to your faculty adviser and/or Pam Rodgers or Joe Heim.

You will need a faculty adviser or supervisor for your internship.  Your faculty advisor for the internship is responsible for your internship grade and the academic requirements you must meet.  Your faculty internship adviser will also be the person to whom your internship supervisor sends reports.  They can discuss with you the types of internships available, the rules which apply to getting internship credit, and they can help you select a faculty internship adviser.

bullet

Create your own internship

A student can create and arrange his/her own internship.  This requires finding an employer willing to supervise you as an intern and willing to comply with University requirements.  If you have a work opportunity or are able to persuade an employer to take you on as an intern, go to Career Services.  They will help you with the process of establishing your internship as a credit earning activity.

What Kinds of Internships are Available?

There are many different kinds of internships available.  Some are local, others are state, national, and even international.  Some are paid, others unpaid.  Political Science and Public Administration students can expect to find internship opportunities which apply to all the different areas or concentrations of political science.  The Department does keep on hand a list of currently available internships for political science and public administration.  A complete listing of internships available can be found at Career Services.  There are also some career advising books that provide information on internships in Wimberly 421.
