SUBJECT:             Requirements for Successful Completion of POL 250 "Applied Practical Governance" 

I have attached a copy of the course description (Form LX-138) of the POL 250 course in which you are enrolled, The course requirements include:

-membership on the Student Senate or RHAC                         

-attendance/participation at related meetings

-complete a short research paper (2-3 pages, word 

        processed) describing your participation, what you    

        learned, what you got out of the experience, etc. (In 

        other words, an evaluation of your learning)

-turn in the research paper to me (421A Wimberly Hall office or my 422 Wimberly mailbox) on or before the last day of classes.

Course Description and Outline

 

Dept-  POL             No.-  250       Title: Applied Practical Governance                   Cr. 1

 

Official Catalog Description: 

Provides practical experience in the various styles and techniques of consensual governance. Open to any university student who serves in the UW-L Student Association Student Senate or the Residence Hall Association Council. Pass-fail grading. Repeatable for a maximum of four credits.

 

Objectives of the Course:

To assist students in the development of essential skills including, Communication, leadership, debate, parliamentary procedure, and judgment. The experience enhances an understanding of the functions and processes of governance and provides an understanding of the practical dynamics of consensus-building and compromise with the university and university system.

Outline of course content:

Student responsibilities include:

--attendance at weekly UW-LSA Student Senate meetings or Residence Hall Association Council meetings (3 absences will result in removal)

 

--fulfillment of any committee assignments

 

--adherence to UW-LSA constitutional guidelines/RHAC guidelines

 

--completion of a written evaluation of the student government

experience (to be reviewed by the faculty of the Department of Political Science) 

Instructional methods and evaluation procedures usually employed:

Evaluation procedures:--fulfillment of responsibilities within student govt.

          --review of writing assignment

Instructional pattern:  (Based on 16 week semester)
