This course is an introduction to the common techniques used by biologists to effectively process, interpret, and communicate ideas and information generated in the biological sciences. Students will learn the techniques in a hands on approach using biological databases. Topics covered in this course will include basic laboratory and field notebook production and use; the use, analysis and interpretation of databases, graphs, tables, charts and other visual aids used in scientific papers; techniques for digital microscopic image production and analysis. Offered J- term or Summer session. Prerequisites: BIO 103 or BIO 105.

In this course students will study and perform dramatic literature from multiple cultures within American society. Plays will be selected from African – American, Asian – American, Native American, Hispanic – American, Lesbian/Gay/ Transgendered/Bisexual and other cultures for study. Students will research cultural context, analyze the plays, develop basic skills in performance, and prepare and perform scenes from the plays under study, in order to enhance student awareness and exchange ideas about the multi – cultural nature of the U.S. and to present their analysis and interpretation through performance. No acting experience is required. Prerequisites: none.

This course builds on ENG 385, Women Authors, offering a more focused offers advanced study of a particular aspect aspects of women’s aesthetic expression – the novel, poetry, drama, film, autobiography, and other genres are possible primary texts. Students will engage with more advanced theoretical approaches and critical/ contextual readings, while studying the gendered politics of producing and consuming women’s artistic work. Approaches might include cultural studies, psychoanalytic theory, socio- linguistics, global matriarchal traditions, new historicism, feminist theory, and so on. Focus will vary with instructors. ENG 301 and 385  3 credits in 200 – level English courses.
