  • Student staff committees

    The UW-La Crosse Recreational Sports Department prides itself on student development.  We are truly a program that is for the students by the students through employment and leadership opportunities.  Student staff members strive to go above and beyond their job responsibilities by voluntarily engaging in four departmental committees listed below.  For additional information on these committees, contact Mo McAlpine.

    Student Advisory Committee (SAC)

    As a representative body of the entire Recreational Sports Student Team, the Student Advisory Council (SAC) provides recommendations to the professional team regarding staff related policies, procedures, and concerns. Initiated during 2003-2004, SAC is comprised of volunteer student team members (one rep. per position) who meet on a regular basis (typically for 60 minutes once a week). This leadership group works extremely hard to develop and improve policies and procedures concerning staff-related issues and the hiring process. SAC is also the primary group involved in the hiring of new service staff members each spring.

    Emergency Response Team (ERT)

    A student team that seeks to ensure the readiness of the department for any potential emergency, ERT evaluates emergency action plans related to medical, weather and potentially threatening/violent situations, and strives for efficiency in upholding accident, incident and injury protocols. Throughout the year, ERT conducts "red shirt reviews" to simulate medical emergencies in an effort to help team members become comfortable when dealing with injuries and emergencies.

    Social Media Administration Committee (SMAC)

    Initiated in Spring, 2014, SMAC was created to guide and improve the social media administration of the department as directed by the administrator handbook developed by AJ Heil and classmates.  This committee will evaluate posting guidelines, strategies for an effective social media page, interaction management, and procedures for requesting new Rec Sports media pages.

    Building Exceptional Service Together (BEST)

    2012-13 marked the initiation of the BEST Committee as a follow up to the successful piloted BEST Program ("secret shopper") from spring 2012.   The mission of the committee is to coordinate the BEST Program and to promote  a staff incentive/recognition program.  The three components of the BEST Committee include:

    • Customer Satisfaction: BESTie Program (secret shopper), comment cards, electronic surveys
    • Staff Involvement: socials, team challenge, recognition cards and incentive program, Facebook group page, volunteer opportunities
    • Rec University: seminars and workshops

    Originally, the incentive program was developed to reward UW-L Recreational Sports Team Members for demonstrating hard work and commitment (called the S.M.I.L.E. Program, Students Motivated by Integrity, Leadership and Enthusiasm).  Implemented as an incentive program, it was intended to be a peer recognition program for co-workers to observe and reward each other when going “above and beyond”.  Today, the program strives to motivate team members to perform superior service and develop leadership skills while being honest and having fun. In addition, the program is intended to include social and community service opportunities for team members to get together and build camaraderie outside of the work environment, in hopes of enhancing the overall experience.
