Caps, Gowns, Hoods and Sashes
Caps and gowns must be worn by all participating students. Caps and gowns are available at the University Bookstore. They do not need to be pre-ordered. The keepsake cap and gown cost $30 plus tax, payable when you pick them up. If you have any questions, call the University Bookstore at (608) 785-8855.
Undergraduate caps and gowns are maroon. Graduate caps and gowns are black. It is suggested that you wear dark shoes and other articles of visible apparel that will harmonize with the academic gown. Flowers and decorative jewelry may not be worn on the gown.
Sashes for students who studied abroad, representing the country where you studied, are available from the Office of International Education, 116 Graff Main Hall. Sashes have been included in the program fee of select UW-L programs; all other students must order and pay for a sash. Check early with the Office of International Education on your sash status.
Hoods for master’s degree candidates will be provided at the commencement ceremony. You do not need to obtain them before then. These are not keepsakes. They must be returned to the Cartwright Center Information Counter immediately following the ceremony.
