ART 103, 104, 105, 106, 203, 251 and 252 (core curriculum); and one elective from 331, 332 and 341; three courses to be elected from ART 201, 204, 205, 207, 214, 216, 218, 220, 221, and APH 202; and four courses to be elected from 303, 304, 305, 308, 314, 316, 318, 320, 321, 403, 405, 408, 413, 414, 416, 418, 419, 421, and 425. ART 399 is required to be taken in the junior year. ART 499 is required to be taken in the senior year.

ART 103, General Art Foundations, 3 cr.; New course
An introductory course in visual art, with emphasis on understanding the methods of art making in a variety of studio disciplines. Topics include: recognition of visual elements and principles of design, methods of applying these elements and principles throughout a variety of art forms, thematic development, relationship of the visual arts to other fields of human endeavor, and an introduction to writing about visual art. Course content includes representative paradigms of world art, Western art, multicultural and contemporary art. Critical thinking is explored through responses to the visual arts through active involvement with various creative processes and media.
ART 104, Foundations I: Basic Drawing Foundations, 3 cr.; Course revision of title, course description and prerequisites
Drawing Foundations introduces the student to a studio-based approach to the visual arts. Students develop a strong understanding of basic drawing techniques via the application of traditional media and contemporary approaches. Prerequisite: ART 103 (proposed).
ART 105, Design Foundations, 3 cr.; New course
The elements of two-dimensional design are introduced through a variety of media and studio practice. Emphasis on concept development and creative philosophies. Problem-solving strategies are explored through studio work and critiques. Prerequisite: ART 103 (proposed)
ART 106, 3-D Foundations, 3 cr.; Course revision in title, course description and prerequisite
3-D Foundations provides the student’s introductory experience to a studio-based approach to the visual art, in the three dimensional realm. Students apply design elements and principles to projects and experiences as they occur in the physical world. Concentration will focus on expanding the visual vocabulary investigations into basic creative processes and design concerns as they apply to three-dimensional form. The course will explore conceptual problem solving, elementary construction techniques and an investigation into the inherent qualities of materials. Prerequisite: ART 103 (proposed).
ART 203, Introduction to Drawing, 3 cr.; Course revision in title, prerequisite and course description
A studio course emphasizing growth in perception of visual form. Drawing as a language is explored through various styles and techniques from traditional to contemporary. The student will build upon Drawing Foundations to discover numerous possibilities and processes through a range of materials and subject matter. Prerequisites: ART 103 (proposed) and 104.
ART 303, Figure Drawing, 3 cr.; Course revision in title and course description
A studio course emphasizing life drawing as an art form through exploration of various styles and techniques from traditional through contemporary. The student will build upon introductory drawing skills to explore more complex forms and imagery.
ART 304/504, Color Theory, 3 cr.; New course
An intensive study of color through studio practice in water-based media. As part of the painting course sequence, this course isolates the element of color in practice while examining its relationship to other elements in analysis. The student will build upon material covered in ART 205 to develop a more sophisticated understanding of color and other attributes of painting. Course content includes physiological and cultural perceptions of color, and processes of color mixture, opacity and transparency. Prerequisite: ART 205.
ART 305, Intermediate Painting, 3 cr.; Course revision in prerequisite
Prerequisite: ART 304.
ART 403/503, Advanced Drawing, 3 cr.; New course
Studio course providing students an opportunity to develop advanced drawing skills and content in a self-directed environment. Students are mentored throughout their further investigation of drawing as a visual language and are encouraged to seek connections between drawing and other media. Prerequisite: ART 303.
HIS ---, World War I, 3 cr.; New course
This course will examine World War I from a European and global perspective. It will cover the causes, nature and results of the war as they relate to the society, economy, politics and culture of Europe. Attention will also be given to some of the global effects of the war as well as the ways this war transformed the nature of warfare in the 20th century.
HIS ---, French Revolution, 3 cr.; New course
This course covers the French Revolution from a European and Global Perspective. It will cover the chronology of the Revolution, its political, cultural, social and economic effects on Europe and the larger world, the experiences of various individuals and groups within it, and its long-term effects both in French and around the world.
