The Residence Hall Director is responsible for the administration of his or her hall. As master degree professionals,Hall Directors are a part of the Student Development Division, directly responsible to the Director of Residence Life and reports to an Assistant Director (Area Coordinator.) A Hall Director initiates, implements, maintains, and evaluates a program in the residence hall which will result in the greatest educational, social, and cultural growth for the individual student and the living group as a whole.
Main Responsibilities
The Hall Director position involves responsibilities in the areas of educational development, advising and assisting, residence hall programming, and administration and management that includes supervision of student staff development and facilities management. In addition to these areas, the Hall Director shares responsibility for the total residence hall program by assisting the Office of Residence Life with specific departmental committee or special assignment area(s) assigned. Residence Hall Directors also provide vital communication between residence halls, the Office of Residence Life, and the total University community.
Educational Development
- Assists students to personally identify, prioritize, and achieve educational goals and developmental needs.
- Supports and promotes the educational mission of the University.
- Assists students in understanding their culture and its impact on diversity issues.
- Provides educational efforts including: cultural and lifestyle differences and alcohol education.
- Shares the responsibility for recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of residence hall staff.
- Acts as a facilitator in developing an effective hall council in conjunction with the elected officers of students’ groups and student staff members.
- Is responsible for promoting an atmosphere conducive to study.
- Initiates and conducts internal research projects pertinent to residence halls.

Advising and Assisting
- Challenges and supports the personal growth of the individual and the community.
- Acts as a resource and referral agent to other student services.
- Meets with students to mediate conflicts and discuss concerns related to personal, academic, or social issues.
- Is advisor to and ex-officio member of Hall Council, hall committees, and hall officers.
- Facilitates initial conduct meetings with students regarding inappropriate behaviors in the hall.
- Oversees residence hall Welcome Week and Move In Crew for new and returning students.
Residence Hall Programming
- Organizes and implements programs for staff/students development on a continuing basis to include diversity/cultural
- Assists student staff, Hall Council officers, and residents in organizing and implementing programs, including alcohol alternative prgrams, for student development.
- Assists students with budget/financial management in the area of programming.
- Assists students with follow-up reports and maintenance of hall government files.
- Works and shares with other Hall Directors in coordinating programs among halls.
- Coordinates hall events with other campus events and the University calendar.
- Develops a working knowledge of campus services in order to assist residence hall students in planning programs and in making referrals.
Administration and Management
- Directly supervises student staff in his/her residence hall. Holds regular student staff meetings.
- Is responsible for maintenance and utilization of student files and records.
- Prepares and submits reports vital to the hall program or total housing operation.
- Establishes a positive working relationship with other University departments and personnel.
- Works cooperatively with civil service housekeeper(s) and works with other maintenance personnel to ensure proper facilities management.
- Works with various groups to enhance and improve residence hall facilities.
- Works with Protective Services in cases involving student welfare and safety.
- Is responsible for opening and closing of the residence hall at the beginning and end of each semester and during the break periods as appropriate.
- Uses various computer software, both commercial and in house, on the Residence Life network in the daily administration of the hall.
- Performs other routine functions contained in the Residence Hall Director manual.
- Ensure the front desk operation meets students needs and is run in an accountable efficient manner.
