School of Arts and Communication

  • Welcome to the School of Arts and Communication!

Part of the College of Liberal Studies, the School of Arts and Communication (SAC) houses four departments:  Art, Communication Studies, Music, and Theatre Arts, all of which provide students experiential opportunities inside and outside of the classroom that foster innovation, technical knowledge, and theoretical understanding.  We provide courses for students majoring or minoring in each area as well as courses that fit into our general education program. We also offer students the option to seek teacher certification by majoring in Art Education and Music Education.

The primary focus of the SAC is to educate students in the performing arts, visual arts, and communication processes and competencies.  Students will gain disciplinary knowledge in each department and become actively engaged in local, regional, national and/or global communities through their chosen discipline(s). We offer students a myriad of experiential learning opportunities as they acquire technical knowledge and theoretical understanding.  The SAC is also dedicated to showcasing the creative and scholarly work of students, faculty, and staff and serves as a major cultural center for the region.

We believe that the arts and communication are integral to thinking with creativity and flexibility - skills that help ensure success in every profession and life experience.

While studying in our departments, students will:

    • Acquire theoretical and historical knowledge from their chosen discipline(s)
    • Develop strong artistic, analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills
    • Cultivate skills in research, creative expression, and collaborative problem-solving
    • Demonstrate disciplinary knowledge and skills through public presentations, performances, exhibitions, and internship experiences
    • Examine the arts and/or communication in diverse social, cultural, political, and ethical contexts
    • Evaluate the role of the arts and communication in understanding the human experience and advancing civic life

We invite you to use this site to explore our academic programs and see for yourself the extensive range of exceptional educational opportunities we offer students in the arts and communication.
