Graduate Programs

Welcome to the home page of the graduate program in Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  We hope that a tour of this web site will help you to understand the opportunities available to both recreation professionals wishing to advance their education and individuals without recreation bachelor's degrees who want to pursue a master's in recreation management or therapeutic recreation.

The UW-L Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation is accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association.

The Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation has two distinct graduate programs.

The Master of Science in Recreation Management prepares students for administrative positions in public, private, and commercial recreation agencies. The curriculum consists of learning experiences critical for assuming high level management positions in the leisure service profession.

The Master of Science in Therapeutic Recreation prepares students for certification as Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Students learn to develop and implement treatment, leisure education, and recreation programs for individuals with special needs.

About 50% of the graduate students in the two programs come with undergraduate degrees in recreation management or therapeutic recreation, but the other 50% come with bachelor degrees in a range of related fields.  Students often have undergraduate deficiencies to complete, but may take those deficiencies while starting their graduate coursework.
