What is the annual gynecologic exam?

This may include the following:

§         Complete medical history

§         General physical examination

§         Breast exam

§         Pelvic exam

§         Pap smear (a screening test for precancerous cells of the cervix)

§         STD testing if needed

§         Education

Who should have an annual exam?

All women should begin having annual exams when they turn 21 or when they become sexually active, whichever is earliest.

How should I prepare for my exam?

Schedule your appointment when you are not menstruating.  In the 24 hours before your exam it is advisable to avoid douching, sexual intercourse, the use of any vaginal contraceptives or medication.

Is there a cost for the exam?

There is a small fee for a Pap smear and for certain STD screening tests.

What if I am interested in a birth control method?

When you schedule your appointment please mention that you are interested in starting a birth control method.  This will enable the receptionist to schedule an appointment for the appropriate length of time.  The Student Health Center is able to provide most types of birth control.
