What causes HIV/AIDS?

HIV/AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

 

How is HIV/AIDS transmitted?

HIV/AIDS is in the blood, semen or vaginal fluids of someone with HIV. You can get HIV if you have sex with someone who has HIV, share needles to inject drugs, or share needles used for tattoos or piercing. HIV can be passed from a mother to the fetus in her womb, or to the baby during birth or breast-feeding.

What are the signs or symptoms?

  • Unexplained weight loss greater than 10 pounds

  • Unexplained fatigue

  • Recurring fever and/or night sweats

  • Persistent diarrhea

  • Swollen glands

  • Unexplained dry cough

  • Unusual sore on the tongue or mouth

 

What treatment is available?

Treatment includes antiviral and other medications.

 

How can HIV/AIDS be prevented?

 

  • Sexual abstinence

  • Having sex with only one lifetime partner who does not have HIV

  • Avoiding sexual contact that exposes you to someone else's blood, semen or vaginal fluids

  • Using a new latex condom and a water-based lubricant every time you have vaginal or anal sex

  • Avoid oil-based lubricants. They can cause condoms to leak or break

  • Don't participate in IV drug use

  • Don't share sex toys
