All women of childbearing age are recommend to take folic acid.

If you are currently capable of becoming pregnant you should take a vitamin supplement containing .4 mg of folic acid. Taking more than 1.0 mg of folic acid a day may be detrimental.

Why take Folic Acid

Birth defects are more likely to occur if you become pregnant without enough folic acid in your system.  Your baby needs folic acid before you become aware that you are pregnant.
