Microsoft PowerPoint Templates
Here are some PowerPoint templates to get you started. You may change the background and layout as you wish. These are set up to work with page limit size of 36" high by 42" wide.

The printing process will differ depending on which college you’re in: the College of Liberal Studies (CLS), the College of Business Administration (CBA), or the College of Science and Health (SAH). {See directions below for each college}. Each poster should list the title of the project, the student(s)’ names, the faculty mentor name(s), and the department name(s). The poster dimensions should not exceed 3x5’ to fit the poster board. The acknowledgements section should mention the source of your research funding, if applicable.

CBA & CLS Students
Students in the Colleges of Liberal Studies (CLS) or Business Administration (CBA) should contact Larry Sleznikow in Educational Technologies (166 Wing; 785-5055). Posters must be submitted at least ONE BUSINESS WEEK in advance of the date needed. If your file is less than 5MB, you can send it via email. If it is larger than 5MB, you’ll need to place it on a CD-ROM or a flash drive. It will cost approximately $45 to have a 3’ x 5’ poster printed on the large-format digital printer.

SAH Students
Students from the College of Science and Health (SAH) should contact Steve Harris, Physics Department, at 785-8428 or Cowley Hall 2012 for information on using the SAH poster printer. Students must have their faculty mentor/advisor present when using the printer, which is located in 213 Cowley Hall. Please contact your faculty mentor in advance as they will need to have their card activated to access 213 Cowley.

We recommend that you use MS PowerPoint to design your poster. The Windows XP computer connected to the printer has a CD/DVD burner and multiple USB ports to read flash drives. The printing cost is $0.50 per square foot and an additional $0.75 per square foot for laminating (approximately $20 to print and laminate a 3x5’ poster). Fill out the billing form that is stored next to the printer according to the specific department. Department accounts will be billed near the end of January each year. For detailed directions on how to use the SAH printer, click here.

Designing your poster using Microsoft Powerpoint or Microsoft Publisher
You can create a poster from “scratch” within PowerPoint (36”X42”) with the knowledge that some aspects such as transparent colors may not print correctly.  There are websites that help with the practical details such as:

http://meeting.apsnet.org/2006/callpapers/powerpoint_posters.cfm

http://www1.wfubmc.edu/creative/Creative+University/Tip+Sheets/PowerPoint+Posters.htm

You may wish to download a free template to manipulate from several potential sites such as http://www.makesigns.com/SciPosters_Templates.aspx  or http://www.posterpresentations.com/html/free_poster_templates.html (select the 36”X42”).

In Publisher you select “poster” Under blank publications. Then go to Page Setup, where you can select your poster layout. Publication type should be 'custom'. The width should be set to the actual height and width that you want your poster to be. The orientation should then be selected as landscape.

Several good sites exist that highlight “best practices” in creating scientific posters.
